always a problem..
> "not always an easy thing for a huge oil tanker like us to maintain our strengths, and at the same time, to start new things from scratch.."

It's still amazing to see how many startups are able to become "huge oil tankers" nowadays. I'm wondering if this situation can last and if the established tech companies will begin an era of multi-decade rule? Microsoft and Apple seem to be still healthy and building up resources to last for the next 100 years, but can IBM and GE still stick around? Can Facebook avoid becoming like Yahoo?

Let's hope for the sake of all that we continue to have the choice at hand..as I also see such developments coming out of #CES2017:

Whoa. 8GB of RAM for a smartphone?!? I think a lot of laptops have less than that. Some not so old MacBooks have that much soldiered in permanently?

I think you are right, most standard laptops start at 4GB with the option to add more. I wonder how big the phone is and if they had so sacrife other features for the increased RAM.

I don't forsee any of those companies disappearing, but their roles in the tech landscape may change. We have already seen IBM do a good deal of morphing over the years.

I could see Facebook going the way of Yahoo or MySpace. Especially if it only acquires startups like it without internal innovation projects. Yahoo had the same problem.

@mhhf1ve, I was thinking the same thing. I keep telling people who have large private groups on Facebook to move them to another platform because Facebook may not be around as long as people think. Everyone keeps laughing at me but I think there is some truth to this.

> "Software development is not a core competence for Deutsche Telekom"... I would think DT should try to change that because software is going to be incredibly important-- and it already is. Having strong software partnerships is good, but also being able to develop software projects in house is a competitive advantage as well.

I noticed that line as well. I'm not sure if she meant that DT is not a software company so it should find partners that were experts in that area?

She seemed to have a theme of not being able to do things alone, so it stands to reason she meant that DT needs software partners. But I think that could be a bad strategy for a telecom to outsource development to partners. Unless someone around here can convince me otherwise that it's not such a bad idea.

@mhhf1ve, I agree that seems like a bad idea to me as well. Maybe later on she can clarify her statement.

To be successful companies have to develop collaborations and partnerships but also remain a leader in the market. Development should also be conducted in-house. They are so many options for development nowaways the cost is not as high as it used to be. You have interns, open source, forums, etc. Hopefully they will reconsider their decision and do in-house development.

There are ways to try to be small when you are actually big. Many companies accomplish this via incubators or accelerators, or they often invest or acquire startups. As more companies realize they need to do this, there will be more strategies. At least they are trying.

Paving the Way for a Digital World
Deutsche Telecom has a valuable partnership with Huawei in that if, like Bronder said, Europe has "slept through the first phase of digitization," this strategic partnership will help to wake it up. She said Huawei is instrumental in helping it develop the telecom part of its cloud portfolio. I don't think Europe was really sleeping through digitization so much as it was so concerned about security that it moved cautiously.

Paving the way for a digital world
I am so surprised about how many things are out there that makes it so easy for the digital world.  Some of the products and programs makes it a lot better for the digital world.  There is so many new ideas out there for companies now-a-days.

I love that there is 8 GB for Smartphones.  This will really make the digital world better and easier.  You will be able to a lot with your phones instead of always needing a laptop with you.

@dchampagne70 I need more than 8GB on my smartphone - I am just now realize that.

One thing that I have been really enjoying these days is Spotify's download feature. It really makes getting my playlist ready to go for a flight super easy - but 8GB just isn't enough!

@dcawrey - Welcome to the club. I just got "bullied" into a new smartphone because some apps I "need" would only work on a more advanaced OS, and my phone didn't have the memory to support the new version of the OS. It;s the way of the CE industry...got to get you to buy new stuff.

@Adi my teen daughters were talking about just this a few days ago. One explained that Apple does that deliberatley, planning on its customers only keeping the phone for a year and then trading up to newest version. She was already wise to avoiding any dowloads, a mistake she said a friend of hers had made.

Re: Paving the way for a digital world
@Ariella, your daughters are wise. I realized that too. I don't do downloads. I also don't install the updates and upgrades as soon as they are available. I wait several months. I have an iPhone and my brother does too. He has not downloaded upgrades for the past 2 years.

It would be great if updates would remember all the apps you purchased and downloaded and copy them over when installing the updates just like software updates and patches when new versions are installed on a desktop.

Unfortnately, with iPhones everything gets wiped out. That's why I don't purchase any apps that way I don't have to constantly install apps each time a new updates is available. Apple needs to do a better job of installing updates.

I always have challenges with getting updates. Something or the other has to happen on my phone with every update. Performance is one thing that gets impacted. Even postponing the updates also doesn't seem to work long time as someting pr the other keeps happening on the phone and you end up restarting, which is no fun either.

@dchampagne70, good point. 8G for smartphones. I am so happy! I am always complaining that there is not enough data on smartphones. Glad to know that know users will have more space.

I agree, laptops even the lightest ones can be cumbersome when traveling or going to meetings. Having the ability to use your smartphones to do everything that you do on your laptop would be awesome.
