Platform for AT&T
I like how the AL talk about security, cyber security to be exact because we need more protection than ever in today's society.

Re: Platform for AT&T
@clrmoney - that truly is a need.  By the design and development platform that AT&T is providing, they are not only scaling and providing that critical security, but further providing an excellent platform for innovation and transforming into AI - the real crown jewel!

Re: Platform for AT&T
As a service provide, AT&T will have lots of opportunities when it comes to AI. Whether its on a smartphone, an IoT device or in the home, the data AI will need to generate is probably going to be pretty immense. It's going to be pretty good for the company.

Bridges to BSS and OSS?
It's interesting that it's being phrased this way, because a crucial feature of bridges, both metaphorical and literal, is that whether we like it or not, they support two-way traffic, and work best when they do. AT&T is doubtless thinking mainly about taking over the work currently done on BSS/OSS, but to succeed at that, it will probably have to import or duplicate capabilities from those systems.

DHagar - that was certianly the buzz at the consumer electronics show this year. AI/machine learning were key topic areas for the device industry, along with IoT

Re: Bridges to BSS and OSS?
From what I heard at conferences last year, the OSS/BSS vendors have made progress. It's not an something that has a lot of glamour compared to the other areas, but service providers have been adamant about that there needs to be some changes. It will be interesting if AT&T does decide to take some of this in-house, and if it does, will it share with other service providers?

Re: Bridges to BSS and OSS?
MikeR,

I think if they're smart they'll share. Software spreads through use; this will extend use further into more fields. Much better to make less, or even nothing, and end up being everywhere, than to keep your difficult development work all to yourself so you can charge more, and end up nowhere.Like love, education, pop music, or the plague, software innovation is at its most effective when everyone can get it easily.

@Adi, very interesting.  That, in my view, is what will unleash the value and trigger entirely new markets - beyond IT with consumers

@JohnBarnes I agree with your line of thinking. This is why big companies are now moving towards using open source technologies versus what they did with proprietary in the past. No one at this stage is stealing code, since every application is so differentiated these days.

Re: Bridges to BSS and OSS?
Dcawrey,

Also, of course, much of the new open software runs on a system of option buttons that configure it to a particular task, so there's really no incentive at all to steal anyone's code. If you actually want to spy on them you need their decisions vector or matrix, which is safely back at the company.

Hmm. Another advantage of the options-and-configurations structure -- what you have to secure is smaller and  can be kept home more easily, and used only as needed.
