RE: Focus on Smart Communities
Excellent shift in focus.  IoT brings new dimensions of "connected" information - coming from sensors - as well as connected alerts and broader notification.  Like the internet, there is value in what is done independently, but the value is leveraged and multiplied when it provides "timely" - ie real-time information one cannot determine on their own city platform and puts it in context with situational awareness.

Now you are truly building value - not just new functional options.

Resiliency
Resiliency IoT is what a lot of companies lack.

It is not just important to gather data from sensors, you must know how to analyze the data and use the data to provide value added services to make it a win win situation for companies and residents.

@batye, good points!  Learning can't stop because things keep changing and we need to learn more.  Some of the problems come from people applying old solutions to new problems and they quit "thinking" and learning.

This is why Telco Transformation and other dynamic relavent sites for research and development are invaluable.  We have a great community and support system for learning what we don't know - to better enable us to learn!

Focus on Smart Communities
"A water sensor could determine that break, and then you might, if it was along a roadway, be able to access a video surveillance camera and look to see if there is water on the surface or if the street had collapsed. You could do things like reroute traffic. You could put alerts on digital signage; many lampposts have speaker systems where you could have audible alerts as well, or you could have a text message that goes out geographically to a mobile phone app."

This is great but I am concerned with all of the speaker systems, sensors and collection of IoT data there will be increased transparency but at what cost. Residents will no longer have privacy except in their homes provided it is not a smart home. This is a prime target to cyber criminals to tap into. I will wait to see what happens.

Re: Focus on Smart Communities
Smart communities does seem like better branding. Being able to deploy IoT across an entire city is going to be pretty difficult.

You've got to start small and move from there. This is true in IoT as well.

Millennials are not the only ones who want the "livability" aspect. Everyone wants to know in real time the conditions of their city or community.

Sustainability is more important that people realize due to recent statistics on global warming. All cities need to embrace sustainability to help save the environment.

@freehe, to  your points about sustainability - yes, the ability to use resources for both the short-term and long-term are key to maintaining and preserving those resources.  It is also important for the quality of life in making cities desirable places to live.  Everyone wants to live in a quality environment.
