SDN Slow to Ignite in Data Centers
This article is well written, thi is very interesting about SDN data centers. I think with SDN being slow to ignite in the data centers isnt really a big problem because we all know it will get better over time but we all want to know when and how. The SDN is well known and will be improved but it will be hard with the data centers because the company has to know what they are doing with the technology and it will be harder to do with all of the problems they are having with the SDN issues. I honestly thin they will get it in the near future and it will be pretty soon over the next year or two.

Re: SDN will get better
@Joe, great analogy.  That sounds like experiential sales - which I think works.  They don't have to be convinced conceptually, they are believers in what they can use and are sold by the better experience.

I am thinking for many, technology will be sold that way going forward.  If they are visionaries on the transformations taking place they won't be convinced except through trial and error.

@DHagar: The way I think of upgrading legacy IT in this way we're talking about is kind of like the way interventionist Jeff Van Vonderen talks about getting addicts to treatment in Intervention: Whatever gets them to go.  Whatever gets them through the door.  Whatever gets them to commit.

@Joe, excellent analysis.  I think the primary driving force for the majority will be not wanting to be left behind - at least that is a driver.  The leaders, however, will gain the full value and strengthen their bandwidth to perform.

Re: SDN will get better
@DHagar: CIOs eventually got on the cloud bus because they kept hearing so much about it.  There's been a huge virtualization push/hype recently, and every indicator is that that will continue for the immediately foreseeable future, so eventually they'll get on that bus too -- if only because they kept reading and hearing about it so much that they eventually told their IT managers to "go virtualize something so we can tell our clients we use SDN and NFV."

@Adi: From what I understand, sector/industry/vertical has a big impact on that.  My IT friends who work in higher education/academic institutions, for instance, have told me some genuine horror stories about how servers are treated.

Geography
Mike, do you happen to know the geography involved here?  Is this global across all regions?  North American repsondents only?  Or...?

I ask because different regulatory schemes can impact how and to what extent SDN is deployed.  (The notorious case of the Google testbed in New Zealand having to be moved because of their use of SDN and NFV comes to mind.)

Re: SDN will get better
@Adi, great analysis.  Which somewhat identifies previous investments, and legacy systems and the life cycle of company IT designs and systems, drives the next steps.

I think going forward - in agreement with your analysis - we will begin to speed up development towards a vision, as there are so many new choices now, rather than building on what we have already invested in.

Re: SDN will get better
I wonder what percentage of data center white space is in modern, shiny data centers (the image that comes to mind when we think of a data center). And how much is actually data rooms within corporate offices (i.e., non-dedicated facilities) or older, small footprint maybe lights-out facilities somewhere. I do think much of the coverage of data centers -- like most industries -- tends to center on what's new and pathbreaking. So we look at new designs and structures for Amazon or Facebook cloud data centers, or those of major colo providers that are state-of-the-art. I think particularly once we get out of the US, the average age of the data center increases rapdily and it's ability to upgrade and the business case for doping so develops more slowly.

Re: SDN will get better
@clrmoney, I believe it will as well. However, it sounds as if CIO's are still working off an old model of data centers; maybe even as legacy systems.

When the leaders start outperforming and transform the data centers into more real-time capabilities and value-added services, those slow adapters will have to pick up speed.

Excellent real assessment in this article - great info, Mike!
