Re: Virtual Reality Innovation is progressing
@JohnBarnes, interesting thought.  I am thinking it may actually create a totally new capability and experience, as yet unrealized.

Sorry, have to ask - I am not familiar with the term quirtle - what is quirtling?

Re: Virtual Reality Innovation is progressing
DHagar,

The logical next question is, is the function-that-is-not-entertainment something we already do, that VR would let us do better, or is it genuinely something people haven't done before but will like when they find it?  My guess is the former -- I don't think we're quite THAT creative -- but I would not be surprised to be proven wrong. Perhaps VR wlll prove to be the perfect way to quirtle, and thus the only way that the great mass of people were able to experience quirtlement.

Re: Virtual Reality Innovation is progressing
@JohnBarnes, as always very insightful and innovative thoughts.  I see the future for VR as being a different and/or multi-dimensional discovery - unique to the capabilities of VR - rather than another entertainment device.  It needs to deliver a unique "new" experience - that possibly only comes from deconstruction.

Re: Virtual Reality Innovation is progressing
Good point! I think experience still plays a part in the consumer wants. If we need something quick and easy we'll watch it on a phone, tablet, laptop, but it's nice sometimes to sit at home in front of a big television.

Re: Virtual Reality Innovation is progressing
Adi, DHagar,

Are we back to the quest for the killer app here? It's probably my overtrained performance sensibility, but it seems to me that nearly all entertainment, games included, is a structured experience, and the whole point of VR is to destructure experience. Maybe there's some reason for people to use VR other than "to be entertained?"

@dcawrey, good assessment.  It appears that at least the VRIF is providing a foundation from which to address this.  Smart move!

Re: Virtual Reality Innovation is progressing
I wonder if we are going to see VR fragment like the smartphone market. Alternatively, we could see the market adopt one standard, like what happened with VCRs and DVDs. But this is a different time, and its clear there are going to be so many companies getting into VR there's going to be a ton of options.

@Adi, excellent point about use of VR for that experience through events.  That is an important factor, that experience is not needed for 100% viewing; just as we view TV and movies on phones and wireless devices but use big screen TV's for the experience.

Re: Virtual Reality Innovation is progressing
@Adi, that's what will trigger the true awareness of what you are gaining through this experience.  People won't know what they are missing until they experience it.  Actually, that is the process Steve Jobs recognized with Apple and his unique products.  And it worked.
