Re: Speaking as a guy who has done a certain amount of local politics ....
@JB:

What people need or want must be the key fact to always look for while planning any intiative in any field. We see good improving ternds in that area as we see customer experience is jumpig up to the list. This model of CX starting intial stage of any iniatiave will ensure that there will be less to no room for customers not in sync with what they expect vs what they see with delivery.

Adolphe Appia, one of the founders of modern scene design and the designer of most of Wagner's operas on their original productions, used to tell designers to design with their feet as well as their eyes, and would bring in actors and singers to walk around on mockups and prototypes before committing to a design. Some great software has been designed by watching actual workers work. This is a lot of the spirit behind devops, and behind "calculator" and "EDA" languages and packages like R and Tableau.

Re: Speaking as a guy who has done a certain amount of local politics ....
Michelle,

Well, it is a little bit of a threatening concept because it takes away the final argument of software engineers and their managers: "That's just how it works. Deal." So it really couldn't come along till about this point in history, because so much of the reward of software development in the first couple of generations was in that amazing feeling of being smarter, more needed, ultimately more powerful than anyone else. Bill Gates himself has admitted that control-alt-delete was a particularly silly bit of design -- but Microsoft could inflict it on literally billions of people with almost no trace of resistance. That was a genuinely heady feeling of power for a long time.

But as the machines themselves and the AIs take over, they don't need their egos stroked, and told to assist a widget maker, an intelligent machine doesn't ask "How can I improve on what I think a widget maker does, and thus place myself higher in the social hierarchy than a mere widget maker?" Instead, it just says, "Show me a lot of widgets being made."

@John Ahh, I failed to account for the legacy of software development. I forget we all lived with whatever was given in the way of software until now.

I agree with this because 1. The technology is so high tech these days its like untouchable. 2. The comunities are sucessful that they know how to handle it so it all works out just fine. So those are my two reson on how i agree and look at this article.
