thank you, good day to all

Platinum

Thanks everybody for listening. And for the great questions. Stream on!

@Michelle, absolutely. App developers are looking for operating systems that can provide them scale and ROku does that with over 13M active customers. That means when app developers look at rolling out their latest and greatest app updtaes, they focus on the platforms that give them the greatest reach and engagement. An example of this is Sling TV's cloud DVR that came to Roku in December but is only just now rolling out on other streaming devices.

Thanks for a great show and discussion Andrew and Adi

Platinum

Thanks Andrew and Adi.

Author

OK folks, we're out of time. Many thanks to everyone who joined us for the show, and please join me in thanking Andrew for a great session.

Author

been great to listen and read the chats. thanks for your insights!

Steel

@Adi, we believe all content will be streamed, including social video. Roku's growth has been driven by the incredible growth in streaming content - the more the merrier!

Second poll - future of STB: 100% selected option D -- STBs are in decline, but there will always be people who want traditional services

Author

Andrew - any thoughts on live streaming via social networks, and 360-degree video?

Author

I assume the Roku OS is more attractive than configuring a customized version of Linux. I have a regular tv that runs a customized version of Linux. My smart tv uses its own flavor as well.

Platinum

Responses to initial streaming device question - all over the place! Couple of Roku's, chromecasts, smart TVs - including one that isn't so smart/connected...and a fire stick.

Author

@Konsultor, @Adi, I don't know the answer to those. Would need to defer to the experts.

Thanks Andrew! I'm glad to see there is no fragmentation on Roku OS :)

Platinum

Earlier question: What's the consumer response been to addressable/targetted ads? Are they opt-in?

Author

With the more detailed 4K and higher resolutions increasing bandwith, does Roku apply header compression on streams?  What could the bandwidth savings do for those with limits on their data plans?

Steel

@Michelle, all Roku players and Roku TVs get the latest and greatest Roku OS updates. This makes it a lot easier for app developers to deploy and maintain their apps since they only ever need to support one version of the OS. No fragmentation on Roku!

Andrew - Another question from earlier: Do you think we'll see market fragmentation with Roku Powered the same way we've seen with the Android OS? Does Roku have strict guidelines for use?

Author

@Video2ip, we think the same! That's why we introduced three new 4K streaming players at retail last year and have launched 4K Roku TVs into market as well. If you have a 4K Roku device you can go to the 4K Spotlight Channel where we highlight th ebest 4K content available through Roku.

@Mike Robuck, absolutely. Our Roku TV business is a great example of the fact that smart TV manufacturers are looking for a modern OS that runs on low-cost hardware, and we're seeing more and more brands turn to licensable operating systems like Roku rather than try to build their own. If you haven't already, take a walk around Best Buy or Walmart and check out all the Roku TVs!

Over 60% of those polled in the US said that their next TV purchase would be 4K. There is going to be a demand for 4K content on the streaming platform.

Steel

5G is a ways out, but how are you preparing for it in regards to streaming? I'll go with D on the poll. There are still millions of people who are happy to get TV over a STB, for now.

Author

@Michelle, we recently launched a new way to publish content onto Roku that makes it easier than ever -Roku Direct Publisher. Check it out! http://newsroom.roku.com/press-release/company-usa/roku-introduces-direct-publisher

What is the future of the TV set-top box?

A.      Doomed, video viewing will largely move to smartphones and laptops

B.      Doomed, Smart TV's will simply integrate that functionality

C.       Pay-TV STBs are doomed, but OTT STBs will be successful

D.      In decline, but there will always be people who want traditional services

E.       Perfectly fine; we will always need set-top boxes

F.       Hunhhh...?? What's a set-top box?

Author

While Andrew switches to the chat board, here's a quick poll for the audience:

Author

Thanks for a great show, Andrew. Great to have you on board. Now for some questions!

Author

Thanks Andrew and Adi, looking forward to continuing the online chat portion!

Author

Agreed - personalization is really important.

Author

I've noticed more self-published content on Roku lately. I assume this means they've opened channel submissions to more folks

Platinum

*Nielson ratings

Platinum

@skarlas they certainly also come in handy when traveling, in addition to regular use in the home!

Author

Wow, I had no idea Neilson ratings were being taken on Roku. Makes perfect sense. I wondered if/when that might happen

Platinum

Are users coming around to targeted or addressable ads? It's opt-in?

Author

Here's an interview with Andrew's colleague on the advertising side of the business that we did a while back.

Author

With all of the various OTT platforms and devices, do you think we'll see some consolidation over the next few years? Are there too many choices?

Author

@Kelsey as a millenial I like streaming devices! I have 2 rokus and apple tv

Author

same question is on my end...

Platinum

Are millenials purchasing more smart TV's or more streaming devices like Chromcast, Apple TV, Roku Powered devices, etc.?

Author

Do you think we'll see market fragmentation with Roku Powered the same way we've seen with the Android OS? Does Roku have strict guidelines for use?

Platinum

Do you have a longterm firmware update plans for your smart tvs? I assume you'll keep TVs updated the same way you have kept boxes and sticks updated.

Platinum

I had no idea integrated billing was possible

Platinum

universal search is very very helpful

Platinum

Scattered watchlists are tough to manage

Platinum

I hadn't thought of that, but the self-installed equipment does have many advantages over traditional cable installation and maintenence.

Platinum

Not needing STB is big, especially with the amount of content Comcast has.

Author

Does Roku apply header compression on streams?  What could the bandwidth savings do for those with limits on their data plans?

Steel

Does Roku have any plans to create a branded DVR box?

Platinum

I think Roku's UI has been pretty good. Some Roku app developers don't do a great job... The new developer sdk is supposed to be a lot better.

Platinum

Technology has been there for a while, now content rights have thawed.

Author

@natppellegrini do you use them all equally or do you prefer one streaming device over another one?

Author

We have a smart tv that's currently disconnected from internet (firmware updates stopped), a chromecase, and two rokus

Platinum

hello - Dallasite here

Steel

audio is on everything is fine, if did not work try to refresh webpage or log out and reloging or try other browser...

Platinum

apple tv, fire stick, smart tv

We have a smart tv and a Chromcast

Author

And hello back, batye

Author

I think it's interesting that Roku has a retail and service provider plays. I remember Time Warner Cable being an early adopter.

Author

@Adi thanks as some people do forget :) @Mike Hello @Andrew in Canada we do see rise of Roku OS build in  - in smart TV but by the smaller players on the market - will big players like Sony, Panasonic will pick up this idea ???

Platinum

Andrew, what kind of traction are you seeing with installing Roku OS on smart TVs? A niche play for now?

Author

Good afternoon everyone!  Remember to turn up your volume on the computers.  At the top of the hour an audio player will pop up on your screen.  If you don't see it, try to press F5 to refresh your screen. Remember, there's no slides for this it's just a discussion, so be sure to post your questions, comments and thoughts on the message boards and we will join you on the chat after the audio stream.
