Less for Century Link
They said they want to reduce SDN and NFV and maybe that is a good idea idea that virtualization is almost everwhere and as well software related technologies.

A better strategy than some...
> "...taking an internal approach to its next NFV/SDN phase by writing its own software."

I think this sounds like a way better strategy than the path of merely partnering with other software firms and relying on outside expertise to get things done. It seems like a particularly good idea for telcos to get into the software development game -- or risk losing its lunch to faster and more nimble companies that do have software development chops.

I think we've seen the weaker strategy from DT on this site before:

@mhhf1ve - great thoughts!   Rewriting a new design will enable them to focus and get the best results using these extended capabilities - vs. add-ons.

Your recommendation for telecos is a great one as well.  If they would "configure" to their demands they would be able to deliver better vaue.

CenturyLink is definitely on the right road!

I think CenturyLink's history as a CLEC has given it the survival skills to know that it's safer to build out their own services as demand grows organically.

I agree. The move to buy Active Broadband really signaled CL's intentions here. Carol wrote about how CL is creating smaller pieces of software to cut down its abstraction layer and get necassary info without "major IT time and expense." If the deal to buy Level 3 goes through, I'll be intersted to see how they mesh NFV/SDN, etc.

I wouldn't expect a problem with the Level3 deal going through based on regulatory approval -- given how the current administration says it wants to let businesses do whatever they want. CL will definitely become an interesting player in the CSP market.

Bridging legacy systems always seems to cause problems and take long. CL is smart in getting into the software development business. This could also create jobs.

Re: CenturyLink
As many astute tech leaders have pointed out, any company that's serious about hardware is also serious about software. Software and hardware go hand in hand, so it's a bit foolish to focus on just hardware.

Now.. focusing on just software... that's a different story, and there are plenty of examples of companies that can do just software successfully for a long time.

Re: Less for Century Link
Time for CenturyLink to bring on the speed. If they don't, they will lose customers to other service providers who are moving fast on this. And the margins in the business sector are pretty good - companies are willing to pony up for these services.

@mhhf1ve, makes sense.  Plus, it appears they are moving forward more aggressively in developing the capability to be a leader.
