I don't think AI is an "existential" threat to humans.. but it's probably not the path to a society of Utopia and leisure, either. AI is probably going to disrupt our current economics is some very bad ways. Unemployment could skyrocket if cars/trucks can drive on their own.. And if Boston Dynamics actually starts to make a robot that can walk around and carry things just like a person... we may see the end to low-skill jobs.

@mhhf1ve I think you could be right about Boston Dynamics. If any company were going to lead the robot revolution, Boston Dynamics would be it. I think we're pretty far away from consumer versions, however.

The way we see it now, it possibly looks like AI is going to take over humans' jobs. But we're forgetting that we are the ones that created this in the first place. As a friend of mine said on FB, it will free us to become more than we ever thought we could become and use our brains at an even higher capacity than ever before.

What is unfortunate is how AI especially seems to be the "coin of the realm"--if one gets into any difficulty with a Google or a facebook, the opportunity to talk to a live person is next to nil these days.

I fully agree that the loss of jobs has been due to automation and transformation of the industrial systems; but I see the future opportunities for automation to "augment" and validate the need for human intelligence to make the future systems work! mpouraryan

It is now, unfortunately, the law of the land here in the United States. The talk by Congressman Keith Ellison of Minnesota was interesting in this regard. Whether the World will follow the US lead is an open question.

The recent moves from Washington (relaxing of privacy rules, targeting net neutrality, reductions in rural funding, drastic moves to reduce educational funding, etc.) is not the path that leads to leadership. As Adam Smith reminded us, even the invisible hand has to be guided.

@mpouraryan - You may be right that with some companies talking to a live person is very difficult, but other companies seem to be going the other direction. I've recently seen advertisements saying that you will never talk to a machine when you call them. My parents recently bought a Samsung Smart TV and I have to say their customer service is amazing.

@mpouraryan - That's really interesting about the Turkish group that supposedly has access to all those iCloud accounts. Considering we were just talking in another thread that in general companies have been able to convince users their Cloud accounts were safe. This is also under the Apple umbrella, who particularly likes to brag about the quality of their products.
