Seen & Heard: Intel Forks Out $15B to Buy Connected Car Firm Mobileye
I really liked this article it was well explained, i think the $15B buy is very good exspecially the way everything is going with technology these days so you never know. The firm mobileeye is incredable with the amount of souces it has to stand next to it and makes it kinda tough to compete with i think. We will all see where this goes.

Intel Forks Out $15B for Mobileye
Interesting combination. We'll have to keep our eye on the Intel-Mobileye deal. Can anyone drive autonomous cars? What if they are impaired by alcohol or drugs? Can they get a DWI, or does the car truly drive itself?

I think it's not a bad bet to say autonomous cars are going to be the future of the auto industry... but it might be a bad bet to focus on a particular set of sensor tech for the driving software. I don't think there has been a concensus over LIDAR versus cameras vs radar, etc. I'm not sure if Mobileye has all its eggs in one "sensor basket" but I assume it must have plans to incorporate other kinds of sensor data sets if they become more economical. Solid state LIDAR sensors might be an enabling tech for cost-effective self-driving capabilities.

Re: $15B
Uber bought Otto for less than $1B.. so this is a bit on the expensive side, but it depends on how many partnerships Mobileye can maintain with automakers. I think Tesla has already abandoned its use of Mobileye for its future cars, but some more established automakers are still evaluating Mobileye.

It'll be interesting to see if autonomous car startups can disrupt this market and make this a poor investment for Intel. If Comma.ai's open source code is more widely adopted, then it might make Mobileye an unnecessary supplier of software.

However, presumably, there will be plenty of regulations that will make it difficult for Comma.ai and startups to really gain traction over more well-funded efforts to make autonomous vehicles road-worthy.

I agree, Ariella. Did you follow the link to the Telecom.com blog? More info on how much Intel has spent on IoT, which I know you follow

Buy Mobileye
I've already seen some of advanced technologies in those type of cars. So if they want to buy Mobileye then I'm all for it.

That's a pretty hefty bet to place on connected cars. Intel must be very confident that that direction willl define the future of the auto industry.
