Telekom Slovenije: Data + Intuition = Success
This is great i really enjoyed reading this with the plan. The graph will be great with this sort of plan witht he data. I really agree with this and cant wait to see where it goes in the future and see the final results.

Re: Big mistake
Heh. Maybe AlphaGo told Google Fiber to hold off for a bit on deploying more fiber?

I don't think big data systems are quite there for telcos to use them for predictive services... yet.

JohnBarnes, mhhf1ve - Are big data systems for telecom at a point today where they can reccomend what new services the operator should deploy, with a high likelihood of success in the consumer market?

Exactly. The example of AlphaGo provides a clear demonstration that machine learning algorithms can find solutions that exceed human intuition and experience. While humans have an understandable path that can be communicated to other humans, machine learning algorithms can just "find what works" -- without having to bother with figuring out how to communicate *why* it works to anyone. That's an advantage, but also a problem....

Difficult judgment call
While it's true that many bad tech decisions are made just to be on the trend, and I'm sure quite a few decisions to go to 5G will be made just that way, on the other hand, there's also the cost of committing to a technology that is going to be superseded sooner or later when the superseding tech is almost here and you can be pretty sure there will eventually be demand for applications that require it. One more trip around with the old one, and risk being caught flat-footed, or jump to the new one, and risk its not being useful for years? That's a hard call.

Big mistake
"Slonjsak feels the best way to use data is to validate or challenge assumptions made more instinctively"

Of course someone who has been in the business a long time feels that way, but he's wrong right now and getting wrong-er.  The whole point of machine learning in big data environments is to get away from human intuition; more and more, the machines are beating people in exactly those intangibles.  He's in the position of 19th century admirals who undoubtedly "felt that the best way to use steam engines was to adjust positions you'd gotten to by sailing."

Millennial focus
The comment on millennials was interesting; that revenue is primarily coming from GenX and Boomers, so that's who you should prioritize. The danger of course, is that you risk missing out on a transition. Nokia was the dominant phone provider for many years, but it's model of selling cost-efficient, hardy phones through operators was almost wiped out over the course of a few short years, as smartphone adoption spread through not just early adopters but also older demographics. And yet there are also hundreds of companies that target new, younger audiences and end up bankrupt. Finding the right timing and strategy for such a transition requires an exquisite balance that is incredibly difficult to find.

dcawrey - and it's compounded by technology innovation, where you have to integrate new features for early adopter customers on one hand; and by newer, more efficient products, that can save opex on the other.

@dcawrey could not agree more as it could play a big part affecting launch... and creating big problems during transition
