Re: Deutsche Telekom 4K
@Adi in light of this development, which follows some others going that way, do you think that 4K is to become a mainstream feature in the near future?

Re: Deutsche Telekom 4K
Ariella - It's an interesting question. I do think so, eventually.

Right now I hearing different things. Some operators are waiting till they are ready with a really high quality UHD product, others are trying to be seen as pioneers and rolling it out now. Still others are taking a more mixed approach, questioning the value of UHD for, say CNN, where you're just going to be looking at a couple of people on a desk - why do you need 4K for that? So they may do 4K for ESPN, but not for CNN - that kind of thing. And still others are just saying, wait and see, we don't feel any pressure to deploy right now. So it's kind of all over the place at the moment.

@Adi True, so it is possible that no single standard will emerge -- at least not for a while.

Re: Deutsche Telekom 4K
4K is all about the hardware. If I see a service promoting OTT for this, I'm going to have to wonder how many people can actually notice the difference since most people use laptops to stream.

Re: Deutsche Telekom 4K
dcawrey - not only that, adaptive bit reate streaming means that unless you have an actual (as opposed to advertised) connection at the time of 15-20 Mbps or more, the actual "UHD" stream you will be getting won't be at UHD quality anyway. The player will recognize the throughput is lower and ask the server to switch to a lower encoded profile, meaning even the stream won't be UHD.

Ariella - Pretty much. Maybe "standard" isn't quite the right word in this context, maybe "approach" would be more precise. But essentially, ye. I think we'll see different approaches from different providers.

Why stop at 4K?
I'm curious if there is a roadmap beyond 4K..? With all the HDR and other enhancements that video can get, is there a growing uncertainty to back 8K or whatever should come next? Will consumers even care beyond 4K? When is it "good enough" for most people?

I think we are at a tipping point for 4K in entertainment, I say that only because I am starting to see 4K Discs taking up shelf space in stores.

I feel your sentiment here. At what point can the human eye not even tell the difference anymore. Maybe the future isn't definition, but experience. Smell-o-vision anyone?
