Already building their own OTT services...
How many broadcasters are already building their own OTT services? (Or have acquired the capabilities to do so?)
Verizon has "Oath" coming online to couple adtech with its video streaming and content delivery. Will it all just blend in with every video service imaginable?
With the exception of Netflix, it looks like OTT and adtech are going to be very cozy together.

@mhhf1ve yes, I agree. I'm wondering if that itself will give rise to premium charges for people who want an ad-free viewing experience.

Re: Already building their own OTT services...
It's certainly going to make the market for content services a bit siloed to have more and more ad-free "channels" -- and you really have to wonder how "ad-free" anything can actually be. Just being a Netflix subscriber probably puts you on a demographic marketing list.

@mhhf1ve possibly, we'd have to check what Netflix's official privacy statement says about passing on information about subscribers.

Looks like Netflix can and does share information about its subscribers with 3rd parties.... for marketing and other purposes, explicitly.

@mhhf1ve ah, there you have it! So your supposition must be correct.

Well, even if Netflix didn't share subscriber data, there would be other ways to identify Netflix users. If a person "likes" Stranger Things -- it's highly likely that he/she pays for Netflix (or pirates videos).

Re: Already building their own OTT services...
I think anyone creating content should be looking at OTT.
Here's the thing: Streaming has changed the distribution game. This took Netflix some time to figure out, but now the company is making its own content.
Why wait for distribution when you can do it yourself?

Re: Already building their own OTT services...
Netflix had a long term vision to be a streaming content company that took on HBO's game. It certainly took them a while to switch from mailing DVDs, but mailing DVDs isn't a bad business even now.

Re: Already building their own OTT services...
It's fascinating that DVDs still exist, right? Streaming video seems like such a better business model for the content rightsholders since they can get people to rent the content forever. But I suppose as long as DVDs can be scratched, then consumers don't actually have a way to preserve their purchases forever.
I haven't seen a "video rental store" run by a mom&pop for a while, but maybe I just haven't been looking? I assume these rental shops must carry some strange collection of videos that can't be spit out of a Redbox machine?

Re: Already building their own OTT services...
Well, apparently, even Blockbuster videos still exist -- in Alaska (as of 2015, presumably because the streaming data caps aren't that favorable in Alaska)....

But I guess there are also some other locations still open, too. Just that they aren't as prevalent as Starbucks nowadays.

Wow. Considering that VHS players are nearly extinct, that must be a hard business to be in. I guess no technology ever truly dies out completely, but....

Re: Already building their own OTT services...
@mhhf1ve I think it's pretty much dead.
It's really interesting to see technology like vinyl have new life in music. That being said, I don't think we're going to see a resurgence of VHS.

Re: Already building their own OTT services...
I doubt VHS will have a comeback like vinyl records, too. Vinyl supposedly has a "warm" sound, but I don't think anyone likes the "warmness" of analog VHS video. It's just static and fuzziness.

Your Own OTT services
They had about 45% saying to use your own experience and I think you should have that option to control their own experience so that they can experience it them for themselves to see if they love it or hate it.

Wouldn't this be the ultimate in a la carte services?
