Re: Smart Home Platform
Exactly. My kids have all seen my passcode, so I've resorted to TouchID... so they'll have to wait until I'm in deep REM sleep to put my finger on the TouchID sensor.

Re: Smart Home Platform
I could not agree more! My kids both have tablets that are rather lazily password protected and I keep thinking I need to go back in and set better parental controls. My older daughter is always looking over my shoulder and she will eventually learn the password I use.

Re: Smart Home Platform
I'm just not sure what kind of "management" this dashboard can do that would be truly valuable to a household. I just want a way to make sure my WiFi network is secured and the wireless router name/password can be changed when I want it to (which some ISPs don't even allow).

Maybe if there was a way to "boost" the bandwidth/speeds for short periods of time, so when a lot of guests are over at Thanksgiving, the WiFi doesn't slow to a crawl with every niece/nephew watching something different on netflix on their phone/tablets...?

Re: Smart Home Platform
As a parent of children who probably use screens too much, I think any kind of "parental control dashboard" will have to be incredibly simple -- and at the same time, be difficult to access. I say this because kids have a way of discovering how to do things without supervision, and if they can get into the "parental control dashboard" -- children will probably figure out how to use it more adeptly than their parents.

And parents just don't have the time to figure out some tech interface that isn't intuitively designed. If parents1.0 couldn't figure out how to program a VCR, I doubt parents2.0 will be figuring out an "XFi media dashboard" any better.

Ultimately, turning off a screen for a kid comes down to "laying down the law" with your kids.. and technology like this probably isn't going to help much with that.

Re: Smart Home Platform
In the short term this sounds like it would be more a techy, early adopter type of function. But as the number of devices and services in the home continue to get more complicated, having a simple interface to manage it all could appeal to tech laggards as well. Maybe even more so than the techies.

Re: Smart Home Platform
@mhhf1ve Good point about the default password, I think this will depend on the household as to how much they'll use this dashboard. However, it does have parental control features and parents can also pause WiFi access if say their child needs to go to bed or focus on reading a book, for example. I would imagine there are a lot of parents that could get behind that feature.

Re: Smart Home Platform
I wonder how many households will take advantage of these functions, given that most users don't even bother to change the default password on their wireless routers? It'll be useful for some tech-minded folks, but I don't think too many people are really going to want to be IT managers in their own homes.

Or maybe I've missed some really cool feature?

Re: Smart Home Platform
This is going to be a great way for Comcast to make some extra cash. I remember the triple play packages - I wonder if the company will come up with a special deal for cable, internet and smart home services?

Smart Home Platform
It may be a positive and negative for this smart home thing but they say it will be in 15 million homes by the end of the year so we'll see about this.
