Re: COWS and COLTS
I know! It'll be super interesting to see where we are in another 20 years or so and how far we've come!

Re: COWS and COLTS
I remember being about 14 and my mom telling me that technologists believed that one day our phones/TVs/computers would all be wrapped into one. I scoffed at the time because I imagined my big box TV in the living room being all those things. Now, not only did that prediction come true, but we carry it around in our pockets.

Re: COWS and COLTS
I know it's crazy! I think sometimes we forget how far we've come with technology especially when it comes to the smart phones! The things we can do now on our phones is amazing.

A twist ending worthy of M. Night Shymalan
That last sentence was the kicker.

As deployment gets simpler and more routinized, you could start doing it for major news events as well; couple that with the rise of participatory/citizen journalism, and it's going to be a very, very open world, ready or not.

Re: COWS and COLTS
Excellent point, afwriter, especially since it appears there is a lot of room, both technical and economic, for expansion. In exponential growth, you are always just after the biggest change that ever happened, and you are always  just before the really big change.

Re: COWS and COLTS
Can we just stop for a second and appreciate how far this technology has come in such a short amount of time. The smartphone as we know it today was only introduced 12 years ago and now a single provider is streaming 40TB of data through portable cell towers.

Re: COWS and COLTS
I am sure it is more cost effective, especially in the long run, to have permanent infrastructure but I would have to agree that it is unneeded and probably unwanted by many.

@Kelsey, that makes sense - because I am certain there is a basic level of capability that will support and sustain the anticipated growth.  Plus you would want to balance the cost of COWs and COLTs - which I am certain is premium for accessibility - versus having and building your own infrastructure.

Re: COWS and COLTS
@dcawrey,  I agree that the use is broader.  This is a great model though for surge capacity and the ability to meet high demand without building infrastructure.

Living in the southern California area - I was witness on the multiple weekends to the "surge" also in traffic - for the 125,000 concern goers - several weekends in a row; followed by the Country Music Festivals the following two weekends.

But like the cloud, great model for meeting dynamic changes and scaling appropriately.
