COWS and COLTS
This is great for AT&T having COLTs/Cell on Light Trucks and COW/Cell on Wheels and the COLTS that has more compacity than the traditional antennas. The COWs is said to be even larger than COLTS. They should use what is needed to make things better in a way.

@clrmoney Doublin mentioned that in addition to the COWs and COLTs, they also look for opportunities to add permanent infrastructure in preparation for future events at the same venue.

Every year, there are more mobile apps and increased usage.
What's interesting about these festivals is that these locations don't necessarily need permanent infrastructure because they really are events that don't occur often enough. Espeically in Indio.

@dcawrey, I agree that the use is broader. This is a great model though for surge capacity and the ability to meet high demand without building infrastructure.
Living in the southern California area - I was witness on the multiple weekends to the "surge" also in traffic - for the 125,000 concern goers - several weekends in a row; followed by the Country Music Festivals the following two weekends.
But like the cloud, great model for meeting dynamic changes and scaling appropriately.

@Kelsey, that makes sense - because I am certain there is a basic level of capability that will support and sustain the anticipated growth. Plus you would want to balance the cost of COWs and COLTs - which I am certain is premium for accessibility - versus having and building your own infrastructure.

I am sure it is more cost effective, especially in the long run, to have permanent infrastructure but I would have to agree that it is unneeded and probably unwanted by many.

Can we just stop for a second and appreciate how far this technology has come in such a short amount of time. The smartphone as we know it today was only introduced 12 years ago and now a single provider is streaming 40TB of data through portable cell towers.

Excellent point, afwriter, especially since it appears there is a lot of room, both technical and economic, for expansion. In exponential growth, you are always just after the biggest change that ever happened, and you are always just before the really big change.
