Poll: Will Integrating the IoT into Smart Cities Be Easy?
Integrating IoT functionality into the heart of smart cities will be:

>>Tremendously complex and difficult.

>>Fairly manageable if planned correctly.

>>A mix depending on the locality, planner preparation and the sophistication of the ultimate goals.

Please elaborate on your answer below.

My answer is:

>>A mix depending on the locality, planner preparation and the sophistication of the ultimate goals.

It would be a mix in my opinion and below are couple of primary reasons why i think so.

- Size of the city and that defines the complex nature.

- Is smart cities initiative part of goals for local and state govrenments?

-  Is there basic infrastructure in place?

- Are people aware of the key features that could result from this initiative?

Very key questions, for sure. It seems that cities are starting from so many different perspectives and points of evolution that it will be a complex evolution.

Re: Poll: Will Integrating the IoT into Smart Cities Be Easy?
Yup, this surely is a complex evolution which is still premature in some ways.

But aleast initiatives like these would help to come up with a basic common framework which should certainly help to ease that strating process. At least all cities will follow standard process and help would be readily available from previous implementers in case of any issues that come across along the way.

Re: Poll: Will Integrating the IoT into Smart Cities Be Easy?
Poll -

Integrating IoT into smart cities will be a mix depending on the locality, planner preparation and the sophistication of the ultimate goals. There are some cities that still don't have paved roads, have one traffic light, one town doctor and do not have internet access.

Smart cities will be the most effective in cities that have automated their processes and business operations. Cities that do not have the existing infrastructure and/or resources will also not have the funds to become a smart city.

Re: Poll: Will Integrating the IoT into Smart Cities Be Easy?
I think it is going to be tremendously complex and difficult. Just trying to integrate IoT into a house can be a difficult task. I can't imagine the number of barriers that integrating IoT into smart cities creates. Then there is security which is a whole other issue entirely.

I was going to say, it's difficult enough outing IoT in a house, but yeah a whole city?!? Security will definitely be the hardest thing to fix/focus on, in my opinion.

Re: Poll: Will Integrating the IoT into Smart Cities Be Easy?
@dlr5288 - Without a doubt security will be difficult to create and maintain for a Smart City. What was crazy was the other post where they talked about not really focusing on that aspect. I can't imagine why that wouldn't be a central concern.

I agree! You'd think that would be the most difficult and most important thing when dealing with IoT in a smart city!

TM Forum's Piva on Creating a Common Smart City Framework
This is very interesting with many good points and with the gagets and technology we have we will have to wait to see results in the future or in short periods of time. I also think this is very good idea with some points.

Common Framework
Really great initiative to have a common framework for smart cities initiative. That makes it easier for new cities that like to move in this direction as there is some ground to start with. Also every initiative starts with that basic model and standards could be enforced and maintained. This would cut down cost, time and effort as there will be no time or money lost for reinventing the wheel.

Ambition for Collaboration
The ambition is that this will lead to a place where cities can easily collaborate, and create a single market rather than multiple markets to drive economies of scale.

Makes perfect sesne to have such ambition. Collaboration is one key element for any initiative and that becomes even critical for such initiatives that are common in nature and leading towards a common goal.

Great to think about a single market place instead of introducing several elements into multiple markets and dilute the economy.

Re: Ambition for Collaboration
@ms.akkineni, I agree. Collaboration will ber great for cities to share information and resources especially for small cities. It will help cities improve city services and services for residents.

It will help reduce fraud in the voting process, workforce, and other areas. It will also help to solve problems faster and make better decisions.

Re: Ambition for Collaboration
@freehe:

Good thoughts about fraud reduction, workforce etc.

Also agree with you totally about problem solving becomes less complex as there is a good chance that there may be others that may have gon ethru the same problem and worked for resolution, who will be able to help readily.

@freehe:

Missed to mention one other thing in my previous response.

Thinking about how collaboration can improve city services, I also feel that there is a need to educate residents so they know what is in store for them. I don't think all of the general population has good understanding so they can related to their daily life.

Smart Cities IoT
"if a bus is moving and is late on its route, who is the driver, etc. So if you have that context information from that bus.."

I have caught the bus to the subway station and it would be great to know if a bus is running late, when it will arrive and the time I will get to my destination. I am not concerned with who is the driver.

I would like to know how smart cities will help residents save money, time or resources with their everyday lives.

Common Smart City Framework
Every city and its citizens are unique, so converting them into smart cities is a complex task. It will be easier for the metropolitan cities to do this, but smaller cities will have to collaborate with one another, as Piva suggests.

Re: Common Smart City Framework
The message, though, is this:  It should not prevent us from trying.     Yes it will open up unforseen challenges--and the meltdown in London today underscorse this--right?

Obviously, nothing will change if we do not try. I guess in some cases it will be educated trial and error.

This is another great article/interview i really enjoyed and with the useful information this is great to learn from. I also think that the common smart city framework will be great and form some kind of population in the great way. It will be a sucess i think and will generate some good numbers.
