ONAP wants more
Whatever they need to do to get more exposure for ONAP then go for it to get people more familiar and educated on what you have to offer or what you're trying to do.

A few months back, a person from an open source community said Verizon was joining ONAP, but once he/she realized what had been said totally backtracked. So I'm going with ONAP over OSM based on the rumor mill.

I had a story all written up and then was told that person had "mispoke." I couldn't get it confirmed anywhere else so I had to drop it.

Wow. It's not surprising that Verizon is considering joining ONAP, but it's a bit strange to see a large telco dragging its feet in public about deciding to adopt an open source project. Usually the feet dragging is done completely behind closed doors....
It would be even more interesting to find out why Verizon is hesitant to join. (Beyond the obvious reason that its largest competitor joined first.)

@mhhf1ve I doubt they'd admit that publicly, but I do think that would be a major concern. Following AT&T's lead here may suggest that they are followers, not the first to realize that this is worthwhile. That's not something a brand that wishes to present itself as a leader is happy about.

I have to wonder if there are other downsides to joining "late" in the game. For example, would Verizon have any less influence on the direction of the open source community than AT&T? I can't think of an open source project that both AT&T and Verizon are a part of, but maybe my Googlefu is a bit rusty today?

@mhhf1ve I doubt being late will affect anything. It seems this is still an early stage. Smaller players especially should be trying to get into the game.

@mhh: Well, ONAP isn't the only open-standards org with skin in the game here. VZ could easily decide to join/sponsor a "competing" organization.
(Yes, yes, I know that they are "non-profits," but -- as was told to be by the General Manager of a non-profit I worked for in my teens, "Kid, every business is for profit!")

All big companies are an influence on open source. Try as many did back in the early Linux days, it was really companies like Google that ran with open source to great success.
What other companies have championed these ideals early on?

@Ariella, that is a good point. By waiting to participate if Verizon participates at all does put them in the position of follower. Verizon has always been a leader. Now being labeled as a follower is not good for their reputation and could impact future sales. We will have to wait and see what happens.

I feel the same way. It'll be interesting to see from here on out if Verizon can continue to be a leader or, because of this, stay a follower.

@mhhf1ve, Good point. I was wondering the same thing. You would think that Verizon would have already joined. I am curious to know why they haven't joined yet and if they will join in the future.

@mhh: I had a conversation with a VZ exec earlier this month on this very subject. He claimed he was not sufficiently placed/in the know to be able to answer the question about plans one way or the other -- although he did vaguely reference an internal email chain that he had seen that morning related to that subject.

@Mike Robuck. Wow that is crazy! The rumor mills are not always right. Hopefully Verizon will jump onboard. They would be a great asset to ONAP.

ONAP Embraces More Members
I can see the onap very successful over the next couple years and will become the great source of the next gen. I really think this is a great way to go about the plans they look forward to plan in the future. I agree that they should embrace more member to the company. That will lead to more of a successful ratio of the work force.
