Iflix goes with MENA
I think that iflix should expand into more countries to get more exposure and for people who are not familiar in what  they do. They should have something that catches their attention  for MENA/or customers.

MENA Region is flooded with cheap IP devices that can stream any content for less than $50.  Even Chromecast is sold in local markets for very cheap and provides you all the content TV/Movies/Music you can sustain.

Iflix's MENA Launch
Gutsy move for iflix to move into the Middle East North Africa region. The content would need to be extremely localized and customized, not only to the people's tastes, but to religious laws. I see they have createda sitcom just for Egypt, which is smart on iflix's part.

@srufolo1 that is a great point. It is easy to forget that the US is a huge market where everyone speaks the same language and identifies with roughly the same culture. I have never even thought about the hurdle of religious laws.

@afwriter  It's got to be a tough one. Censorship is big over there, and you can't show the slightest bit of skin on a woman. That's why it's so smart that iflix created sitcoms especially suited for places like Egypt, etc ... I'm not even sure how big sports, such as soccer, are over in those parts. Then again, they started out in Malaysia, Philippines, etc..., where there is also a Muslim presence.

afwriter, srufolo1 - I think going global is a tricky strategy. You have top pick the right markets and really review the content you offer. As you point out, local content norms can be very different, but also local preferences are different. Major summer blockbusters from Hollywood may not be of as much interest as local fare, featuring local stars. And yet, content from a third country can sometimes appeal -- as Nader says in his comment about Bollywood and Turkish content doing well in north Africa.

@Adi Interesting that Bollywood movies would go over well in North Africa. Some of the content kind of puts the characters in questionable situations regarding the Muslim religion. If North Africa refers to Egypt, they are not as conservative as other Islamic countries. I was in Cairo and felt no need to wear the head covering. It seemed quite Westernized. Bollywood is popular here, too. Slumdog Millionaire and Monsoon Wedding were among my favorite movies.

I know Netflix has global ambitions, but it would seem to me localized services are going to do quite well. They have first mover advantage, and are able to adapt to to local market more quickly.

There's probably room for both Netflix and regional services when you think about it.

@srufolo1, I agree. Other parts of the country has different views and interests than Americans so content provided has to be specialized based on those interests - religion, traditions, local music/artists, local fashion, etc.

They will have to create content specific to each emerging market down to the local market in a particular region to ensure they are able to obtain as well as retain new customers.

@afwriter, @srufolo1. Good point. I totally forgot about cultural different regarding women and gender. That eliminates a lot of content that is shown in the U.S. This may also require them to create new content that addresses censorship and cultural differences.
