..this is as such providers have also moved on to a "APP-Demand driven" model.   VIacome/CBS (as I believe they're one not withstanding the spin) has CBSN, has its' All Access program--so the Cable providers need to really think long and hard about their own viability--as I write this, I'm evaulating DirectTV Now..and the HD quality is beyond the pale.

A Video component is necessary--at the startup I work for , the Daily Outsider, we have a "Broadcast Grid" for instance that features SKy News that vistors can click on demand--what is annoying, though, is the automatic start of the videos on CNN/'etc.

Can you share some updated perspective on this for us all as you seem to have your "ear to the ground" in Canada and see whether Canada is a harbinger of potential further progress?

I don't think all service providers need to use video because not all of their customers watch video. There are several successful companies that have never used video.

Video Necessary
Some companies use video and it doesn't generate in sales. Companies have to weight the pros and cons of using video and develop a strategic plan for why they want to use video and what they hope to accomplish by using it.

@freehe: Certainly, although I think that it is reasonable to consider network carriers and service providers "different" in this regard the lines increasingly blur between those who operate networks and deliver data and those who create the consumable data that travel on those networks.

Comcast comes to mind -- i.e., its acquisition of NBC Universal...

@Mike: There have been some articles this year in industry pubs like Variety and Hollywood Reporter on the tremendous clout that Netflix is wielding, completely disrupting the industry as well as the social levels on which it operates. Top studio execs can't get their phone calls returned anymore like they used to.

There is an interesting parallel between west coast and east coast here. There was a piece in Politico today about how the socialites of "Old Washington" are having the same difficulty in the Trump Administration.

@mhh: One of my friends on LinkedIn has had a popular discussion going this week on this profile as he looks for a cheaper option for a landline. Circumstances make continuing to have a landline option highly preferred, but he and his family are looking to save money.

A lot of suggestions for VOIP services like Vonage, a lot of suggestions for Ooma (which I am largely unfamiliar with; can someone here shed some light?); a lot of suggestions for "artificial" numbers via services like Google Voice and Skype.
