SD-WAN Booming
SD WAN or Wide Area Network has a bright future ahead with their cloud based technology. They will also make themselves more useful and valuable for the customers and the world.

@clrmoney. This is great. SD-WAN can help companies reduce the IT budget, provide a ROI and save on TCO. This will free up money to provide wanted service for customers and keep the shareholders happy.

If it is saving them more it only makes sense to continue the SD-WAN wave. It will be interesting to continue watching the evolution of SD-WAN and what benefits it may bring to both users and vendors.

An outcome to be expected
By its nature, SD-WAN deploys fast -- all but instantaneously.  And long acquisition cycles are themselves obsolete; quick response counts for a great deal. Thus, new nets going in and old nets expanding are going to be reaching for SD-WAN as a first choice; everything else is slower and more difficult, and probably more expensive.

We've passed the tipping point. Local hardware based solutions are just never going to be the cheapest OR the most reliable solution again, except in very strange or exotic circumstances.

@JohnBarnes, excellent remarks and assessment.  I believe that to be true.

I like Mike's breakdown on the three types.  I am thinking the new combined breakthrough values will come in the virtual category, which unleashes the greater potential that SD-WAN provides.

@JohnBarnes, great points. Just curious which is more secure SD-WAN or VPN since most enterprises use VPN and based on the statistics will be switching to SD-WAN and direct internet access by 2020 and a few reasons why?

Direct Access
This is great. SD-WAN will allow companies to provide direct access to the internet anytime anywhere 24/7. Access will be provided in a secure manner since SD-WAN can offer encryption.

2020 SD-WAN
"By 2020, more than 60% of enterprises will have deployed direct Internet access in their branch offices, up from less than 30% last year."

Wow. This statistic is amazing and aggressive. In the next sixteen months over half of the enterprises will provide direct Internet access. This is double the figure from last year.

Technological growth is exponential.

Reselling SD-WAN is a ways off. 

That being said, the subcription model is doing well for cloud. It's made things like licensing a lot eaiser than ever before.

@mpouraryan This type of technical deployment is so new, I think it's going to take a while to get to the reselling stage. 

Remember, whether it's cloud or virtualization or anything else new, reselling usually comes after a vendor is able to work out the kinks.

I agree--but vendors are better off engaging a channel sooner \than later in order to be able to attack enterprises deep and wide.

I don't deny both your points. What i can say is - it would be risky engaging vendors too soon or too late in this process. We just need to wait for the right time where things get to a bit stable state, may not be too perfect. That way we can ensure that vendors are pulled into the game at the right time to roll up their sleeves.

@ms.akkineni It would seem to me that vendors reach out to customers way to early in the process. 

I have experience in this because its the dynamic between sales and implementation. Salespeople are always going to tell customer what they want to hear. This creates friction.

Exactly.

I can certainly relate to one of my experiences where we had our sales team giving heads up about vendor and their services to the customer well ahead and the real vendor engagemnet got delayed extensively. That caused a clear dissatisfaction for the customer as there was an expectation set. We also had to deal with various challenges at implementation level.

It seems that we have come to an impasse in technology where if you are not one step ahead you're two steps behind. I think companies have to move this aggressively simply to keep up with the times.
