AT&T goes deep with SD-WAN
I think they should be heavily involved with SD-WAN because they have a lot to offer when it comes to networking, virtualization etc. So go for it AT&T.

AT&T Digs Deep on SD-WAN
Getting higher speeds at lower price points across multiple geographic locations will be the draw for enterprises to have SD-WAN. AT&T's offering should be well received among enterprises, large and small.

Google calls it eating your own dogfood. A term I've never liked, because who eats dogfood?

Anyways, smart for AT&T to deploy this themselves first and learn everything they can - it's going to make this process a lot easier for the company.

I never liked that term either. Five or six years ago I heard a former cable CTO talk about his short stint at Google and he mentioned "dogfooding." Letting employees test and trial tech products and services seems like it should be a no brainer. I've heard service providers say they were launching new services or applications with "friendlies" first, which meant employees.

@dswarey @Mike yes, they could simply call it "eating your own cooking."

@Mike Robuck Yep, it's a total no-brainer. I just wonder where the brainpower was at when they decided to call it dogfood. It's not a positive way to label a product that eventually will be used by customers.

@dcawrey: That's the whole point of the saying. If it's on par with actual dogfood, why in the world would an average human customer consume it? The idea here is to compel the organization and its employees to "eat its own dogfood" until they improve it to the point where it's not dogfood anymore (or, at least, it's really good dogfood). ;)

I imagine that the expression refers to dogfood makers (a la "giving them a taste of their own medicine") -- the idea being that dogfood makers, as humans, may intrinsically hold themselves up to be better than their consumer (i.e., dogs), similar to how other companies may presume customers to have lower standards than they themselves do. So the expression works for me just fine. If you're going to serve this product up to the hoi polloi, be ready to consume it yourself.

@Joe - It makes a lot of sense the way you describe it. Though I'm not sure everyone would view it the way you do. I think the first tendency is to look at the product negatively with that kind of term. People might be more receptive to a phrase like "eating their own cake." Though, to be fair, quite a number of toddlers enjoy dogfood.

@elizabethv: Sure, but if you're eating your own cake, what's going to make anyone in your organization think that there's anything wrong with it or that it needs to be improved upon?

That's why they don't call it "dogfood" to the customers -- but they do refer to it that way internally. ;)

@Joe - Maybe the cake is dry. :-) Just kidding. It's probably good that they don't share the phrase with customers. They'd likely struggle with accepting the phrase just as much as this message thread has.

@elizabethv: FWIW, in an interview I did w/ Level 3's CMO, Anthony Christie, he used the much more neutral phrase "eat our own cooking". That wording should make everybody happy, ne c'est pas?

You made good points about high speed service, lower prices and multiple locations. I agree that AT&T offerings will be well received among enterprise world for good reasons like their long standing networking, virtualization abilities.

@ms,akkineni  Yes, despite the stiff competiton AT&T faces in the SD-WAN arena. it should do well considering its strong brand.

Forgot to mention the flexibility that SD-WAN offers because enterprises no longer have to rely on proprietary equipment. And security is built in, a definite plus.
