SD-WAN Advantage
I think that you should try and do something different that no one else is doing whether the result is good or bad and that's what SD-WAN is doing so good for them.

Poll: What Will Slow Down SD-WAN?

The biggest issue in the transition to SD-WAN will be:

SD-WAN signifies a big change for carriers and vendors. What will be the biggest drag on its acceptance?
  •  Its value proposition: It's a mixed bag with drawbacks as well as advantages.
  • The desire of carriers to protect existing technology until end-of-life.
  • The vendor community is immature and must shake out.
  • Powerful vendors will push against SD-WAN because it threatens their dominance.
  • None: The transition will be quick because SD-WAN offers so many advantages over legacy approaches.

Interesting read about the business side.

Ideal customer sounds like one that is between small and medium sized. I think that is where the profit margins probably are.

Comcast's Lewis: No MPLS Advantage for SD-WAN Service
Comcast made the correct business decision in going with SD-WAN in favor of continuing with MPLS. There will eventually be no future for MPLS, and it will mostly be SD-WAN, so now is a good time to go for it.

I have to go with:
  • The desire of carriers to protect existing technology until end-of-life.

Nobody like change especially when they have spent a fair amount of money on the technology they are using now.

@Afwriter very true. After shelling out significant sums for it, no one wants to be told that they need to replace it without getting as much use out of it as they expected.

Agreed. I think it's the smartest move for them. Why stay with something when you know it's eventually going to die shortly?
