Re: Digicel video service is much needed
I agree. It's probably less time consuming, but I'd like to choose for myself.

Re: Anchor for broadband
@dcawrey, That is a great point, though a lot of people don't think that they should have to pay for video either.

If that's true it's just as funny as it is scary.

I get why this may be a desirable idea, but I don't want a machine deciding what the important parts of the video are for me.

@Elizabethv, I know what you're saying. It is hard to write anything that grabs people's attention anymore because they just want to see their clip and move along.

Re: Digicel video service is much needed
Well, I vaguely remember reading an article that stated 45's intelligence briefings were short (like a page) and peppered with his name throughout so that he would continue to read it and not just skim it. But I think there's a big difference between a 70+yo man who has the focus of a fruit fly and a teenager who does....

Re: Digicel video service is much needed
@mhhf1ve - Maybe it's the writer in my heart, but I think there's a bigger talent to writing a book than a movie. Not that they aren't both art in their own right, or that one is necessarily greater, or has a more impactful message. I just see nuances in books that movies can't begin to convey. And I love movies as well. They're just different. And it genuinely saddens me when I write anything of substantial length just to have its meaning lost in an inabilty to maintain focus for that length of time. It genuinely frightens me when I hear our President requires his intelligence briefings come in 140 character blurbs. *I'm just going to say I don't have any kind of reliable source to prove that, but I read it in an article. So while I can't promise it's true, honestly just the thought frightens me. It frightens me that we are raising a generation of kids who this very likely will be true for.

Re: Digicel video service is much needed
I'm not exactly sure why so many people seem to express fear about younger people absorbing video media more than books. To me, media is media. There are trashy books. There are garbage videos. But there are "classic" books -- and there are also "classic" videos. It's just that the history of video hasn't matured as long to build up a library of work. Is Quentin Tarantino a lesser "author" than Stephen King? Why should Shakespeare be held to a loftier title than Christopher Nolan? Someday a YouTube star will be recognized as a brilliant auteur, but it will take time for us to collectively realize it. Just as the Beatles were criticized in their early career as no talent musicians.

@mhhf1ve Everything is moving towards video - which I think is a scary thing.

I still like reading. I still like writing. But I am starting to think I am in the minority these days. For some, it seems like reading and writing is too much work.

Re: Digicel video service is much needed
> "We're already raising an entire generation that struggles to read anything more than 140 characters and still retain the information they read 150 characters ago."

I would like to see quantitative data on the attention span and memory of humans over time. When "reading and writing" became a mainstream phenomenon, vast numbers of people "forgot" how to remember long passages of spoken words -- because it just wasn't a necessary skill once a person knew how to write things down.

I personally don't think that anything has fundamentally changed in our collective brains. We haven't altered genetics with smartphones. We've only trained our brains to pay attention to shorter time frames, and that training can be unlearned for important tasks. Maybe I'm wrong?
