The IoT future is definitely going to need decentralized power sources, so I think we're going to be seeing more and more micro power plants.

Or at least more and more batteries everywhere to help even out the power loads over time....

@mhhf1ve, definitely developing.  That scenario I believe is right around the corner.  You are right, they will have their own sustainable energy. 

Maybe we will further develop micro renewable energy sources, as opposed to a centralized source of power, now that you mention it.

It's also possible that data center drones will autonomously fly over us and provide edge apps and services along with wireless connectivity. Facebook is already working on the wireless drones that can fly indefinitely using solar power. Not sure if there's any energy leftover for edge computing, tho. Maybe someday.

@mhhf1ve, that certainly makes sense.  I think multiple types of "renewable" energy may become the long-term solutions.  The demand will probably establish a legitimate market.

Perhaps as solar panels get cheaper, these small edge datacenters will be self-contained units that can power themselves?

@mhhf1ve, interesting thoughts - as always!

What I am seeing is more of a hybrid.  With the increasing networkings and SDN/NFV, the continuous flow of data (which I view edge computing as contributing to) feeds into highly efficient data centers that, via cloud, can be located anywhere. 

You are absolutely correct that cooling and reducing energy for major centers is advancing, but I believe that is one of the areas in which their ultimate efficiences will make them unbeatable in their ability to scale and deliver.

I wonder how edge computing will really turn out since major data centers are located near cheap energy or cooling. Cell towers and "the edge" are located near population centers, so the energy costs could be significant and not very efficient. 

Maybe we'll see more offshore data centers near populated cities as a hybrid solution? The ocean (or lake or big river) can provide cheap cooling for an underwater data center.... and 90+% of humans live near a body of water.

@dcawrey, good analysis.  I am thinking it is beyond the hardware and will be driven more by the applications with edge computing.
