Re: More Hiring for Positions
True! And when a person is given so many responsibilities in a certain amount of time, most of the time it won't be done the best.

Re: More Hiring for Positions
If only organizations understood this--it seems as if in the quest for automation (what we've deliberated here) the most crucial element seems to have been overlooked on a constant and consistent basis.

@elizabethv : Such moments are to be savoured--but the good news is that you can, with the right planning process (and with the evolution we're witness to in Technoology) give your child the best that there is--so don't despair--I always kept the option of home schooling open for my child.

Re: More Hiring for Positions
@Ariella - You're right and I never even thought of it that way. I am homeschooling my son, who is in Kindergarten this year. I was lamenting to a friend of mine that I feel like maybe I'm taking an experience away from him. Her response was that I am giving him the experience of getting more time with me. While also giving him one-on-one attention, while her son, who is also in Kindergarten - is in a class of 21.

Re: More Hiring for Positions
You make an excellent point about skills transfer. There are many moving parts to a successful organization...I can see how some employers might want to avoid spending a lot on training.

Re: More Hiring for Positions
Proper training inside companies is going to be really important. The problem is that those skills often get transferred somewhere else, as people change jobs so often these days. That might be why companies aren't spending more on training.

Re: More Hiring for Positions
True. I don't think a new employment law would be the right answer anyway. I think employers really need to learn how employees actually work. Piling extra tasks can make sense up to a point (when there is overlap) but it's not a longterm solution.

Re: More Hiring for Positions
I think many fail to notice diminishing returns when adding the tasks of multiple positions to a single person. The person may be able to do the extra tasks, but perhaps not well enough because they don't have the time.

Re: More Hiring for Positions
@elizabethv It also happens in education. Class sizes grow to be able to accommodate more students without having to hire more teachers. And the quality of education inevitably suffers as it is not possible to maintain the same level of student attention in a class of 25 as it is in a class of 18.
