Re: Functional model
@mpouraryan: I am curious to see if NFV and VNFs will make their "faster and cheaper" mark to the extent that we start seeing a coalescing of "edge" and "central" datacenters.

Of course, proximity still has an impact on latency, virtualization or no.

Re: in 2017?
It is all about getting things as fast as possible for the least amount of money. We'll see what happens..

Re: Functional model
I am happy to note that I seem to be "the majority"...that's a change--as I always seem to be in the minority somehow..>Faster and Cheaper is always the logical approach--there is no other way--is there?

I hit number 1...
...but I think it's likely that all four will be possible beneficiaries of NFV. It will, as these things always are, a case by case rollout.

Functional model
"NFV is all about reducing hardware in network infrastructure that's it!"

To me, it's of little surprise that, as of this writing, this is the fourth-place option. The functional model of NFV is a tad controversial. Tom Nolle, for example, sees it as simply being a replacement of the physical with the virtual. (Light Reading link)

Of course, many virtualization/NFV proponents would tend to argue that that's the point, but there may be some agility benefits being missed here if not enough innovation is happening.

Re: in 2017?
@mhh: I'm slightly inclined to agree with you -- the fact that the automation element is kind of a subset of the "faster and cheaper provisioning" element notwithstanding.

I'm not so sure we're THAT far off on the automation (although definitely so, IMHO, with true, generalized AI, as well as the true self-organizing network (SON)), as indicators suggest that it's already here to a certain degree.

in 2017?
The short term is all about faster/cheaper provisioning of new services. The effects of big data and AI on the network won't happen for quite some time.... just my two cents.
