Cloud for NFV
I think that Cloud will be able connect with NFV/Network Functions Virtualizations with the different ways to implement things so this may be a good idea.

Yes, it's pretty common for engineers to name their own gear they set up. Whether it is a server or a router, that's certainly been the methodology I have seen.

Re: Cloud for NFV
DCawrey,

Yep, and I used to think that was a bad thing. Then I tackled my first actual big-data/data science project. I very carefully prepared a pros and cons list for all the different software and how it might be combined to do what was needed. My supervisor said, "We're hiring you to do the data science, which means we have to trust your judgment about it, and the tools you are most comfortable with are the ones you actually believe are the best, so use those. It's good to know that you considered others and looked at other possibilities, but the tools you prefer to use are just one more expression of your judgment, and that is what you are being given this job to use."

I think this is part of what has made the pilot project a success and now that we're moving into further phases, I have a lot of confidence in the approach. Yes, you'll often get the software the responsible engineers feel the most comfortable with. If you actually trust the engineers, that is just what should happen.

I love the pets and cattle metaphor
It definitely reflects an ongoing change in the software world, and if we pay attention to its second order implications, it's even better:

1) people grind up cattle as soon as that's the economically sensible thing to do, but they may keep an old pet lingering on for a long, long time, even if it is good neither for them nor the pet,

2) even though cattle are interchangeable, you still need to have a vet available for when things go wrong, and that vet will be more expensive than the one you could use on your pets,

3) pets tend to become a deep, confusing welter of purposes (like, keeping old Dave on the payroll till he retires at full benefits; the pet software is the only thing that the Department of Homeostatic Paralysis is really comfortable with; no one can explain the cloud to the Deputy Vice President for Sticking in the Mud.) Cattle have one clear cut purpose and you keep them as long as they are good for it, then sell them or slaughter them.

4) Cattle are efficent but people get attached to pets. That's why a constituency always develops around making pets of the cattle (i.e. customizing the software 'just because.')
