NFV Growing Up Quickly
I thought that NFV has some years in the game but if that is the case things are progressing with new age technology. I know that hopefully they will be more to offer as time goes on.

Re: NFV Growing Up Quickly
NFV is coming faster than I think anyone expected it to. We've been talking about it for years, but the key element is buy-in. That's happening all over the world at this exact moment.

AFWriter, the point Ray made about it helping to remove customs and by extension other bureaucratic challenges is a very good one, I thought.

@cweinsch@optonline.net. Yes it is great that it helps companies reduce being held up at customers. This helps save companies money, time and resources.

Re: NFV Growing Up Quickly
@dcawrey, I agree. US-based companies and global companies such as Cisco, Huawei, Ericsson, HP,  Intel, and IBM. As more companies buy-in there will be more opportunities for collaboration and partnerships.

Re: NFV Growing Up Quickly
@clrmoney, I agree. NFV has been around since 2012. It has 3 components VNFs, NFVIs and NFV-MANO Achitectural Framework that are all interoperable.

NFV also works well with SDNs. NFVs can make use of redundant resources without compromsing performance.

Nice Analogy
I love the metaphor and after going through a few toddler stages myself I know that they can go through phases both good and bad which is important to remember as we look at the rise of NFV.

NFV certainly isn't an adult yet. I wouldn't want it driving, that's for sure.

Re: Nice Analogy
@dcawrey: It may be more about misdevelopment than underdevelopment. Tom Nolle had some harsh words about the development of NFV in a recent Light Reading interview. (link)

I spoke with ETSI's Joan Triay about some of these criticisms in a recent Telco Transformation Q&A (link). He seems to suggest that the ETSI-driven model is purposefully flexible to encompass many new innovations and accommodate many types of VMs. I'm not so sure I'm convinced that that undoes Nolle's critiques, but it's a very fair point.

And, in any case, you're right. Still early days, regardless of who's right.

@Joe thanks for the link. Though it is not always fun to read the negative stuff it is necessary to get a clearer picture of the state of the industry.

I think we're always talking positive when it comes to tech. There's certainly some downsides.

@afwriter: Yeah, but look at how old the underlying concepts and technologies are. Is it really a toddler, or is it perhaps better described as an angsty, misunderstood, temperamental -- yet promising -- teenager?

Masergy Watson
Technologies like NFV are mostly predictable. Toddlers are unpredictable. Masergy's Watson comparing NFV to a toddler is a poor choice. Technology can't and should never be compared to a human being.

Re: Masergy Watson
@freehe: They're both arguably unpredictable -- but the behaviors and circumstances of both can arguably be anticipated.

Technology isn't so much predictable as it is anticipatable. But pundits love to predict -- and many of those predictions are true only because they make SO MANY predictions. Statistically, a few are bound to be correct.

Masergy NFV
It is great that Masergy NFV has been used since 2015. It is great that Masergy offers others products such as routers, firewalls and VNFs which helps them gain a wider range of customers.
