Re: Snap Snap
@Ariella: FWIW, what little reporting I've seen out of The Information -- at least when it was freshly starting up -- has at times seemed to be poorly researched (I'm specifically thinking of a tabloid-like piece that insisted -- based on rumormongering, apparently -- that Amazon was getting into the smartphone business when it most certainly was not).

Perhaps their standards have risen since then... Who knows?

Re: Snap vs. Instagram/FB
@elizabeth: Moreover, Snapchat has been taking the tack of other socials by making part of their app a news and content platform -- recommending stories and whatnot. Unlike most photo-app startups that have come along (and gone), they certainly understand that they can't just stay put.

Re: Snap vs. Instagram/FB
I "revisited" this today and still think that Snap will be a "niche" player becuase it has a unique offering--and there are the broadcast platforms who are turning to it--but the long-term viablity of it is of concern that I am sure the dynamic duo at the realm of SNAP are well aware of--I know the community agrees--it is fascinating to be witness to it all no doubt.

Re: Snap vs. Instagram/FB
@Joe - I agree, I do see a lot of people posting their "Snaps" on Facebook. And it isn't wholly unpopular, so I would imagine it does have the ability to survive on its own. I couldn't imagine it ever taking over the realm of Facebook, but standing on its own, as its own form of social media, I see as completely feasible.

Re: Snap Snap
@Ariella: Instagram also seems to have responded better to marketers' demands in various offerings -- and it's really evolved as a marketing platform over the past year.

At least, that's my perception.

Snap vs. Instagram/FB
Let's justify my middle-ground answer by putting it this way.

I commonly see people posting their Snapchat-filtered selfies and videos...on Instagram and Facebook.

That should tell you right there that it's no threat to FB/Instagram...but that it can survive on its own (absent FB more directly entering Snapchat's space and beating the tar out of it...but there's something to be said for being first).

The "harmony" seems to be the rule--not the exception unless folks decide to "shut down" the access--that's where it becomes interesting.

Anytime your stuff works together (IoT for example) is a good thing. The harmony between Facebook and Instagram definitely gives IG an advantage.

Yes Instagram is coming on in a major way--the question is at what cost?  That's the key question.....

Re: Snap Snap
@Ariella:  I think that this fact is quite well known--it will be interesting how SNAP continues to navigate through the challenges.
