IOT picking up pace quickly
I'm not surprised because IOT/ Internet of Things have a lot to offer for businesses as well as customers. I think that it will have more exposure in the future as time goes on.

We are alreayd there, though, @Bayte especially as we're seeing almost 100% penetration rate here in the United States and also in Europe.    How much more "Wide" do you believe we can go?

A smart suitcase is an awesome concept
In some science fiction story soon, I'm going to use that. So your suitcase has access to a line of credit, and instead of schlepping it from the hotel to the airport, going through checked baggage, all that ... you just hand it over at the smart bag kiosk in the hotel, having told it "Get yourself to home" or "Get yourself to hotel where I have reservation" by a specified time.  Then it shops for the cheapest carrier that will guarantee on time delivery and may go by a route totally different from yours (in fact I'd envision a spoke-and-hub bag system modeled on UPS or Fed Ex, but, for example, in some areas it might be able to get there faster by going on truck or rail than by flying).  If your bag is going to be late, it calls you to tell you so.

Fuel efficient, anti-theft, anti-terrorist, anti-smuggling (you could require that smart bags carry electronic manifests and route themselves to checkpoints, and if the bag doesn't usually travel on a passenger plane, a lot of the incentive for trying to get a bomb into it goes away).

You could probably also tell it to stop off at the laundry/dry cleaner and get stuff cleaned or mended too, or even to go to a store and replenish your makeup or shaving kit or get you a new shirt.

Come to think of it, I want one.

Your smart suitcase idea reminds me a bit about that hitchhiker robot -- that made it across Canada without incident with the kindness of strangers -- but was brutally attacked and dismembered when it tried to cross the US.

mhhf1ve,

You are so right and I'm plagiarizing you immediately.  As soon as there are smart suitcases there will be smart suitcase-jacking software, and probably someone will figure out a way to hold smart suitcases for ransom.

Your suitcase jacking scenario makes me wonder what Elon Musk must be planning to protect his upcoming fleet of autonomous semi-trucks. Highway robbery may get a new reputation.

In DIRECTIVE 51 I pointed out that a bumper to bumper high speed truck convoy will be essentially weaponizable the same way an airliner was in 2001.

Somewhere out there someone clever is already dreaming of mixing the lanes on a multilane freeway ... I just hope someone even more clever is dreaming of a way to make that impossible.

@JohnBarnes, As usual you summarize topics well. I agree. The underground world always find a way to tap into any new technology that comes on the market. Companies cannot advance fast enough to thwart the hackers.

Re: A smart suitcase is an awesome concept
@JohnBarnes, That is hilarious. I never thought of having a smart suitcase. Based on your estimations I don't want one. I don't want any inanimate object doing things for me that I can do for myself. It will further cause people to lose their social skills and act like robots. Human need to interact with each other frequently which is why so many people commit suicide or become depressed.

The more smart devices we  have the more people will become secluded from each other and lose their sensitivity, compassion and socialism.

Re: A smart suitcase is an awesome concept
freehe,

Well, I admit that talking to my suitcase, no matter how smart it is, will probably always be a poor substitute for talking to the family.  But I'm not sure that there's anything especially humanizing about lugging a box of clothes with a handle through an air terminal.  I'd worry a lot more about robots/AIs replacing the people at the counter and the flight attendants, where human interaction really is part of the job.  (Don't think it could happen? Have you used an electronic checkout at a supermarket? Remember how you used to have to trade a little small talk with the cashier? Or if you're older, have you ever had the sort of short conversation that used to be routine with anyone at the gas station you use most often?) I can see the concern about losing touch where people used to do the job and we used to interact, but as I recall we never did talk much to the luggage.

Single Digits?
I think that it would be awesome to have IoT trackers in the single digits, I would be slapping them on everything from my phone to my kids. It's not a far-fetched idea considering how tech usually follows the path of becoming more affordable over time.

Re: Single Digits?
No concern about the privacy erosion having trackers on everything and everyone? We already have enough smartphones tracking our whereabouts all day. I understand wanting to know where your kids are at all times, but that data could also be used for nefarious purposes too.

There is no privacy no matter what we somehow hope for.  The question for us is to be smart about it as best as we can to manage the process and minimize the challenges--easier said than done, though.

Re: Single Digits?
@mpouraryan, I totally agree with you. I worked in IT security for 6 years and try to tell my social network about risks but they don't believe me. I am reading a book now called Dragnet Nation that talks about all of the privacy risks that exist today. It is scary sometimes if you stop to think about it.

I think privacy erosion is a foregone conclusion anymore. There is not much difference between tracking my kids using an IoT patch than there is buying them a smartphone or plugging a Hum into their cars.

@afwriter, You are so right. I try to educate my social network that is not in IT about these very issues but they don't believe me. If people knew all the risks and how easy it is to access a person's information they would choose more wisely the products and service they purchase.

Re: Single Digits?
@afwriter, Wow being able using IoT to track people and things is amazing. However I will pass on using that technology. This gives "big brother" more opportunity to watch people and provide yet another way for hackers to access things and people. There are also consequences if strong security measures are not implemented.

It is amazing that IoT trackers can track up to 12 city blocks for those who want that feature.

IoT Security
I am glad to hear someone discuss using security with IoT. It is about time that security is being planned as part of IoT deployment. The strategy to traverse the public network is great. The ability to quickly recognize anomalies, generate alerts and shut down communications or services to a specific device is great.

Re: IoT Security
Completely agree! I think it’s been a long time coming. Security is at a higher risk now more than ever, in my opinion. There are so many high security risks and it’s about time ioT involved security in.

IoT Costs
It is great that the costs of Cat M1 are going down. A price drop from $250 to $40 is huge and purchasing Cat M1 based on price is a no-brainer but companies have to look at all aspects - pros and cons of using it. The fact that network costs are going down is great. That has been a huge expense for companies for years.
