The Digital space  has been here for some time now and the smartphones has been here for a few years now but I think there will be more digital related things like gadgets and advanced technology to make it easier.

Red Hat working with telcos? Who would have thought...

I mean, in 2017 it does make sense. Who has more experience with open software other than Red Hat?

Classic organizational theory cycle at work here
The movement to the edge is something that a political, economic, or military historian probably should have expected.  There's an advantage to centralization (the king can use the barons' troops and doesn't have to worry about the barons rebelling; a nationwide widgetmaker can standardize widgets and transport them with specialized widget-movers to reduce unit cost; a general can decide where the most effective place to commit the reserve is, choosing from the whole battlefield).  But once things get big enough, there start to be advantages to decentralization (leave driver licenses at the county and  state level because you don't really need a single federal one and it's easier to keep an eye on the files; Ernie's Specialty Widgets can have the widget you need at your door tomorrow, three days ahead of the generic one from United Consolidated Widget; on a hundred-mile front forces may need to call for backup right now instead of routing the request thirty miles back up ten organizational levels).  So authority devolves out to new local -- i.e. edge -- locations.  Only .... once that's in place, there are advantages to central control .....

And the cycle repeats, quite possibly through all of human history. Allies become puppets who become provinces of the empire and provinces are placed under direct control, then the central empire is broken into provinces for administrative convenience, and finally some of the provinces are too costly to support and are spun off under friendly puppet governments ... which grow more independent with time.  And so forth till the end of time!
