Re: Time of Death?
It's true that no one would start building an airplane company by hiring two bicycle mechanics now -- but replicating Amazon with some tweaks and localization tactics has brought about Alibaba. Perhaps eBay can't be cloned, but twists on its business model can look like Craigslist. You can't copy something successful *exactly* but if you change it just enough -- you can get a Pixel2 vs an iPhone or a Coke vs a Pepsi.

Re: Time of Death?
@mhhf1ve I don't create videos and don't really follow YouTuber, so I don't have first-hand knowledge of this. However, I do follow some people on Twitter who do post videos on that channel, and they are very upset that much of their content, which they are certain doesn't violate the terms of services, has been demonetized. So the balancing act appears to need some more tweaking.

Re: Time of Death?
YouTube has plenty of problems. It has to appease content creators with fair revenue splits. It also has to police videos for inappropriate or illegal content. It's not easy. But YouTube is at least in a decent position for maintaining eyeballs watching its streams.

Re: Time of Death?
mhhf1ve,

The thing is, there are a lot of things that you can only do once, because once someone else has done them, the environment and its opportunities no longer exist. No third world nation tries to start industrialization with canals and steam-driven looms; when Brazil started building airplanes they didn't hire two bicycle mechanics.  YouTube and Amazon were both one-time things in which the starting company groped its way toward some way of making money by providing a service whose demand far exceeded what they'd thought it would be,  both in quantity and in purpose. But now that they exist, "Hey I can do a lot more than cat videos" and "The same platform can sell things besides books" are no longer discoveries waiting to be made; they're obvious truisms based on more than a decade of history.

@mhhf1ve YouTube has quite a few problems of its own, judging from the reactions one sees in the comments to a company blog post on its steps to enforce standards here:  https://youtube.googleblog.com/2017/12/expanding-our-work-against-abuse-of-our.html

Re: Time of Death?
Youtube started small with viral cat videos and other short clips, so I wouldn't necessarily dismiss Facebook's ambitions if it's truly dedicated to creating a video channel. Amazon has accomplished a decent lineup in a few short years. Facebook may have to pivot, but if it has the right strategy, it could become the next Youtube (not that Youtube has even found its own footing).

Time of Death?
I don't really see a clear way forward for Facebook here. I would liken their original content strategy to that of Microsoft getting into the Smartphone business. The market is just already too saturated with the big players and even some smaller players who are still doing it better than Facebook. There are also the issues of accessing the content, content quality, and the number of worthwhile shows. Even if I wanted to hear what Lavar Ball has to say - which I don't - what do I watch after that? Nothing, now I have to switch over to another OTT provider to watch something else.

I know that facebook is one the the most popular social media sites including twitter so I'm really not understanding why would they be having problems with videos etc. Maybe they shuould fix the problem or whatever it is behind the scenes so that it can function properly because that is money when you want to post something important or related to business.
