Time Out
Someone should start selling time out desks...

Re: Time Out
Haha! I must have been thinking about co-workers who use speakerphone with the office door open. They should go to time out for it.
Re: Time Out
@Michelle: This was an issue for someone I know... A particular VP at her company does this all the time, and her cube at the time was right outside his office. Worse yet, it wasn't just work conversations that she'd unwillingly be privy to. She'd hear all his fights with his wife!

At any event, congrats to the winner.....as I send a Virtual High Five to @Mike for this month's..and some very very interesting contributions--I did "throw my name" in the hat..and for a change, actually did two!!

Re: Time Out
Oh my! There's nothing quite like a noisy office neighbor. You get all sorts of information you don't want and with regularity.

@Michelle yes, one of the downsides of working in close prozimity to others.

Yes, or have their own cones of silence. That's one thing we've lost in rendering phone booths obsolete -- a relatively private place for phone conversations.

Re: Time Out
@Ariella, I'm laughing at your comment and realized how much I despise talking on the phone in front of other people. I rarely make calls when other people are around which is why I like texting so much. I'm not sure why it bothers me so much - I guess I don't like people listening to what I'm saying - I also think it's distracting. It doesn't seem to bother other folks however - they are happy to chat away on their phone!

Re: Time Out
@vnewman Yes, some people don't care if they are overheard. I guess so long as they are not discussing something that is legally required to be confidential, it's OK for them to comnpromise on their own privacy. But it is so common for people to chat away with abandon that there are some specially designated "quiet" train cars where passengers are supposed to be able to escape the noise.

Re: Time Out
I’m the same. To such an extent that my phone conversations dropped to pretty much zero when I was living with someone.
I don’t like talking on the phone when I’m driving, so alone at home is pretty much my only phone time.
(The upside is most of my friends will answer the phone when I do call; since they assume it must be something serious!)

Re: Time Out
Agreed! I would like to hear fewer loud phone conversations in public. We thought phone booths were such a waste of space...

Re: Time Out
@Michelle Maybe we need to come up with some pop up privacy boxes that people can carry around with them to keep their conversations private. Maybe something like this pop up tent for changing.

Re: Time Out
@Ariella - make them a Faraday Cage and I'm sold! Much more portable than the one in the cartoon anyway. And then we won't have to worry about being hacked.
@Michelle - Lol, I never even thought of it like that. Some people definitely need to find phone booths for their conversations. People who yell into phones are horrible.
Re: Time Out
@elizabethv: FWIW, most everybody tends to talk louder into the phone and other devices. It's a natural and common phenomenon that has been noted by the medical community.
In any case, I suspect that the next step of such a tool (whether used to keep your privacy or to shield yourself from others) would be for the shield device (tent or otherwise) to deliver ads to you. You'd be forced to choose which material you wanted to be exposed to -- that of your colleagues or that of advertisers who want to sell things to you.

Re: Time Out
I can get behind that!!
The pop up changing tent is a very interesting concept. Is this what modern-day superman would carry in his messenger bag?

Re: Time Out
@Michelle LOL I'd guess he'd need something --a s most phone booths have been eliminated. That was even a problem he had back in the 20th Century, as I recall from one of themovies. Perhaps he'd adopt a high tech solution now like a screen of invisibility or an AR projection to allow him to change in privacy.

Re: Time Out
@Ariella - I'd seen this television special that talked about an invisible robe the military was working on inventing that used hundreds of tiny cameras that played a live feed onto hundreds of tiny screens all over the suit. Maybe he'd develop a suit like that so he could change today. Lol

Re: Time Out
@elizabethv that would be useful. Hey, if Wonder Woman can have an invisible plane, why can't Superman have a robe that renders him invisible?

Re: Time Out
If he's as fast as The Flash he may not need a booth of any kind to change. No privacy needed if the human eye can't even detect your presence. :)

Re: Time Out
@Michelle yes, why not? I thought there's some episode in which the two race, but certainly Superman should be very fast.
Re: Time Out
@Michelle: Considering the trend of people using speakerphone, not sure about how well this idea would take off. At the least, you wouldn't be protecting your privacy so much as you'd be shielding yourself from the sharing of others.
Re: Time Out
@dcawrey: I would welcome going to the "time-out desk" if I was cursed enough to be working in an "open workspace." It'd be the only way I could get any work done!
