AT&T Smart City Vision
They are already getting a little advanced with the city so with AT&T getting on board will be positive and negative in a way for me because they will be ways to snoop into peoples lives even more or make things easier in a way or both.

There is immense potential for smart city technology to change the way we think about muncipalities. However, that won't arrive without some growing pains. There's a lot of stakeholders in massive projects like this, so I think a slow and steady pace is the smart path forward.

I can do without the drones
For the most part, I am all for smart cities but I don't like the ideas of drones working on utility lines. It's not that I don't think they would work, I think they will easily replace the non-descript FBI surveillance van parked across the street.

I like the idea of the Firstnet initiative and all of the benefits it could provide. My only worry is that we would become too dependent on the system and there are a handful of scenarios where the first responders' system could be wiped out if there was a total broadband failure. That being said, for emergencies like the terrible hurricanes we experienced earlier this year, this may be a life-saving program.

@clmoney you don't need smart cities to be snooped on. People already let cameras, sound recording, and tracking of location in by using their smartphone features and apps wherever they go, not to mention posting pics and videos on social media.

@dcawrey Indeed, and the more a city already has in place, the more pain there will be in having to replace it with the more advanced technology and new connected solutions.

@afwriter while that is a possibility, there's nothing to stop drones doing that even without helping do work at heights.

@afwriter My understanding is that it would be in additon to whatever traditional channels of communication are already in place. in other words, if the system should fail for some reason, they would still be able to use whatever they use now.

@Ariella you're right, but for some reason, it just seems so much more nefarious when you think about not being able to go anywhere or do anything without someone listening and watching. Much like (most) political arguments there is no right or wrong answer here it is all personal ideology. Also, it's easy to lie to ourselves out of convenience, we tell ourselves nothing bad could happen with our smartphone because we simply don't want to give them up.
