The Cost of Smart Cities
<Another problem that smart cities can help solve is the Digital Divide. That includes putting WiFi in public spaces, regardless of neighborhoods to increase access to the Internet for all. It also applies to using the Internet to improve neighborhoods.>

Who ends up paying for something like this?

Excellent question I find myself asking when I read about smart city advancements. I can only assume steps taken now will determine who ends up paying and how (in the future).

Re: The Cost of Smart Cities
That's a good question. From my point of view, it would have to be AT&T because there's no way a city has the resources to do something like that on a city budget.

Very valid question. I think there has to be some arrangement out of understanding between At&T and the city government.

@afwriter A number of smart city programs that AT&T has invested in also gets some government funding. But, according to Zeto, AT&T is laying out the lion's share of the funding.

@Ariella, AT&T isn't doing this out of the kindness of their hearts. That investment has to be recouped somehow.

Re: The Cost of Smart Cities
@afwriter AT&T obviously hopes to more than recoup its investment of billions, but that doesn't mean that every little pilot program itself will return a profit for the company. Many companies engage in programs to help the underserved for the goodwill they reap. For example, when Whirlpool donated washers and dryers to schools for its Whirlpool Cares Program, it didn't expect to make money off it directly, though it might get some tax benefits But it does refer to its good works in its marketing, and it's possible that people who read about would be more inclined to buying their products because of it.

Facebook & Amazon are already weirding me out with their targeted ads based on my offline activities. I’m not really looking forward to the (probably not-so-distant) future where even more data points are readily accessible!

@faryl Those targeted ads also kind of freak me out, but sometimes they actually are useful because they advertise the very thing I needed or was looking for, so it made it convenient.

I wasn’t super freaked out until I started seeing ads for the exact same thing as an impulse buy that I’d bought in an actual store. (So there was no online history for it!)

@faryl Yes, that happens to me also. But it could be because you looked up something about it online, or something similar to it, before you bought it at the store.

Re: The Cost of Smart Cities
I wonder if local businesses chip in money at all. That seems to be a strategy for community improvements in San Diego. Businesses seem to recognize that things like cleaner sidewalks, more parking, bike racks, etc. make neighborhoods more attractive and therefore easier to attract customers, so chip in to offset the cost of some of the local initiatives to make areas more desirable. (On a larger scale, does Starbucks still partner with AT&T to offer their customers WiFi? I wonder if some of these programs piggyback off of things like that)
