Top Tech 2018
It is very interesting to see what new service or product will be on top in 2018. I'm all for SD-WAN Software Defined Wide Area Network as they spread out to do different ventures and offer many things for companies and customers.

For My Money...
A very interesting read with a lot to take in. For my money, I would have to say that while all of these will grow in 2018 I think that cloud adoption is going to be the biggest.

@afwriter, I think you are correct with cloud - I see that as becoming a ubiquitous utility.  But then, as the article identifies, the combinations as well of virtualization and artificial intelligence will be major drivers and market success in my view.

@batye, good prediction!  It will increasingly be the backbone for computing.  I further believe the markets will expand as companies gain confidence in the security and create a hybrid of in-house systems and external cloud capacity.

@bayte/@Dhagar:  Great discourse--but I wonder what you both think about this as we see the "mid-term" analysis being presented here:

Re: For My Money...
@mpouraryan,  great review and interesting article - strategy business does great work, as does PWC.

My take:  This is certainly the world of possibilities, but I do not think every possibility is going to become a probability.  There is cost, politics, social, legal, and labor implications that I believe will ultimately determine the makeup of work in the future.

My vision is that indeed technology will replaced repetitive low value tasks but that you will still require humans to make decisions regarding the use of technology and the results.  I see technology as being applied and augmenting human intelligence rather than replacing it.

@mpouraryan, thanks!  It has to, the other is unrealistic.  Plus, we can't have more idle people and the good ones being trained sitting by.  That would create social upheaval!  So we will all keep our eyes on reality and work together to make it so!

Re: For My Money...
@DHagar, Good points. Technology can replace repetitive tasks. However, robotics and AI are not faulty proof and errors will occur. In addition, robotics and AI cannot replace human customer service. Robots and AI cannot deescalate a situation when a customer is upset and  complaining about a problem. In addition, not all situations can be coded because sometimes human also think-out-of-the-box which cannot be coded or at least not yet.

Re: For My Money...
@freehe, great points!  Absolutely!  The judgment aspect needs to remain the domain of human intelligence.  The predictability of variables in the application and the response must be of value to the specific situation, which cannot be predicticted (ie think "game theory").

@batye, brilliant!  I think game theory is very relevant.  It represents the moving pieces and the unknowns with new access to information and new decisions by users.

@batye, makes sense - particularly if the cloud systems offer more robust security and real-time monitoring.  That would be highly competitive and would certainly outperform the capabilities most organizations have on their own.

I would say Cloud services, 5G and SD-WAN willl be popular in 2018. Due to the new tax changes major companies will have some funds available for R&D which will allow for more trials/pilots and more resources to expand services.

2018
2018 will be an exciting year. Hopefully more startups will move into these areas mentioned in the article - SD-WAN, cloud, 5G and machine learning. 2018 may be the indicator for future inventions and technology.

Outlook 2018
Another factor that will determine the direction of technology in 2018 will be the mid-term elections and any changes in the current presidential administration. As we saw with the EPA, CFPB, and FCC major laws that helped the country were overturned. More of the same could continue that would greatly affect technology.

I just read this article today discussing how politics will affect major technology companies.

AI
AI and machine learning have pros and cons. There are risks such as security risks, lack of security standards and underground criminals that can use AI to commit crimes.

Bill Gates, Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk are concerned about the dangers of AI.
