5G Vision
What I see in the 5G is mainly positive but I'm sure that there will be a few negatives like many other things that come out. It make things better for business but you will always have someone abusing the system.

I love that. It's not enough to have the dream; one has to work at realizing it.

I'm wondering how this vision will play out.. a thousand micro-data centers -- located how? Perhaps some of these data centers will be mobile themselves? So that their benefits can be re-located in near real-time to places that need them the most.

@mhhf1ve: I can't imagine data centers being physically mobile. I would imagine these micro-data centers will be at client sites or at central offices.

Not too long ago, Sun Microsystems made some serious data centers that fit inside a shipping container that could be dropped off almost anywhere that had plumbing for cooling, electricity and a data connection.

I know Oracle killed off Sun's container data center project, but there are other projects that put a completely "lights out" data center anywhere a data connection and electrical requirements exist. So it's not so beyond imagination that mobile micro data centers might exist someday.

@afwriter - I am sure you're right. You know they would be hugely beneficial for the military, needing data in remote areas.

I'm sure the military is already working on autonomous *flying* datacenters to handle swarms of drones and whatnot. Skynet is almost coming online.....

@mhhf1ve: INteresting information. I had no idea this was possible but presumably it is costly to move them around physically. They still might be useful for specific purposes such as field events.

Oracle didn't continue with Sun's modular and portable datacenter project, but a quick search reveals that Google has its own modular datacenters (and a patent for them) -- and that other vendors (eg. HP, Cisco, IBM) have their own versions now.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_Modular_Datacenter

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Modular_Data_Center

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modular_data_center

However, it looks like Microsoft (and Google) is moving away from scaling up its data centers with shipping containers of computers.

I'm not sure how expensive it is to move these kinds of datacenters around, but presumably, if they exist, then perhaps there's some benefit to them that overcomes the costs of transportation. It will be interesting to see how 5G broadband wireless might make portable micro-data centers more common and useful. Perhaps we'll see self-driving data centers in the near future that can optimize networks while transporting themselves wherever they're needed in real time....

<<Perhaps we'll see self-driving data centers in the near future that can optimize networks while transporting themselves wherever they're needed in real time...>> that is a pretty imaginative point. I wonder how the algo for that will work. Somehow, the signal would have to come from where the demand for these specific type of data centers rises.

I have to expect that Google's Loon project must be working on those kinds of algorithms right now.. maybe handing them over to AlphaGo to figure it out for them. :P

(But putting a data center on a helium balloon probably isn't going to happen for quite some time....)

Re: 5G Vision
Kishore, mhhf1ve,

Considering how much traffic a contemporary geosynchronous satellite handles -- far more than most groundbased data centers -- and we put those up where no repair person can go (yet, anyway, at least not as a regular thing) -- and let them run for decades, and they aren't much bigger than 2 shipping containers stuck together .... I think the only question is whether/how often in the future anyone will need a mobile data center badly enough to pay for it.

I think as the costs of mobile data centers fall -- someone will definitely find a use for them and pay for it. Pay-as-you-go mobile data centers could be a thing soon enough, especially if they support the much hyped 5G speeds we're all reading about.

@mhhf1ve - That's a genius idea! If there were mobile data centers they could relocate to various spots that they knew would see an influx in people, and demand for data. It could really benefit a lot of people and even businesses.

I'm sure people must be working on the tech now. We'll soon have self-driving mobile data centers. (Although I'm sure it'll depend on your definition of what a data center is...) If the wireless broadband capacity can handle mobile data centers, then I'm sure someone will create services and demand for them.

Be the Visionary for 5G
The idea of micro-data centers is interesting. But, as someone already pointed out, where will they be located? Sounds like things are slowly being in put in place for 5G to roll out.

@srufolo1 the way I see it you are right things slowly fall into place with 5G rollout... Micro-data centres does make sense as it easy to operate and use them...

And it’ll definitely be interesting to see where 5G goes from here. I think they’ll be taking over a lot of locations and the new connection will be super strong.
