Everything is software
There is a bigger picture here; OSS/BSS cannot continue to be seen as a separate thing from the virtualized network. Everything is software. OSS/BSS functions (rather than monolithic systems) will need to be part of the new innovative network applications not separately tacked on.

OSS/BSS - Red Haired Stepchild of Technology
Interesting analogy. OSS/BSS needs to get out of the back office and be used more by marketing to develop new offers, build new business models. The red haired stephchild of tech, can deliver so much more to marketing / product development in operators, but there needs to be a culture change. As you say. the only time OSS/ BSS gets noticed is when something goes wrong. Red haired kid needs to get out more.

Re: OSS/BSS
@Ariella: I would join the gang as well. This surely is a bit of gray area to me when it comes to these options and pros / cons. I just noticed a response from Mike where he included a link for more material for reference. I will surely check that out.

Re: OSS/BSS
@Mike @Joe yes, I'm sure that many (and I include myself in this) are not 100% clear on all the differences and particular advantages and/or drawbacks of each option.

Joe, I think you're right. Lots more to learn here. Maybe we'll see something from Heavy Reading that provides more info.

OSS/BSS
I suspect that with such a close race among the various options, there is still a lot of confusion (or, perhaps, avoidance) surrounding OSS/BSS issues.  Perhaps an in-depth series on each of these would make for some illuminating reading.
