Re: Merging
True, good point.

I'm not exactly sure how these two will end up with the merger, just because they are so different. True, they don't have the best track record with clients, but hopefully this merger will make them both work harder. Especially when it comes to the consumers.

Re: Merging
@dir5288--I agree. The article sounds as if they are keeping customers as their number one consideration, but we'll have to see how it plays out. As someone else said, we do consider DirecTV to be more cable-based and AT&T to be more phone-based, but there is crossover...and neither one has the best track record for customer service, so maybe this merger will help...?

Re: Merging
True, good point!

I also liked the part in this article bout the problems that they faced with the merger. It was difficult to get the sign off. Overall though I'm glad that AT&T and DirecTV made the decision to merge because I think it makes a lot of sense on both parts.

As long as they keep the customers the first priority, which this aticle states, I don't see any problem with the merger.

Re: AT&T and DirectTV merge
Interesting (and on point) that you mention AI.  One of the difficulties with that kind of data -- even where it is structured -- is that it often contains human forms of expression -- which we will need cognitive learning systems to interpret, analyze, and make recommendations therefrom.

Re: Merging
@dlr: I think it's because AT&T and DirecTV are "different enough."  Are they both carriers/service providers?  Absolutely!  But we think of AT&T as a phone company and DirecTV as being in the cable/satellite TV vertical.

But you're right.  It presents a good argument for the lack of consistency in allowing this one but disallowing AT&T's proposed buyout of T-Mobile.

Great Interview
@Mike:

Great interview. She provided good explanation about how they dealt with platform, databases, their billing consolidation etc. It didn't surprise me when she siad FCC approval was not easy. She reiterated again at the end 'Customer Fisrt' as the takeaway.

Most importantly I really like the level of clarity that she demonstrated through out even when it has to do with very low level details.

Customer
We both had very customer-centric cultures..

There you go, She almost got a buy in. Being customer centric is the real key for businesses. As Pam mentioned that appears to be the priority from both companies. We can only expect many more good things to come.

Re: Merging
@dlr5288:

Yes, as it is with anything there are merits and demerits.

However i have to say this, AT&T has been marketing this all-in-one package to a great deal. I am the personal witness for this. When I was in their store I was provided all the details about the deal and alliance. I obliged to listen to the sales rep but had to gracefully decline as i have a similar set up with Verizon FIOS.

Merging
It's interesting that AT&T can merge with another companyas DirecTV. It would be crucial that both companies had the same idea and thoughts towards their customers. It seems for the most part that they did.

I think this was not only great for AT&T to learn how to manage merging with other companies, but for oter carriers to be able to take a chane and merge also.

I can see how merging can go terribly wrong though. If the companies customers don't want the same things or the companies themselves don't agree, it can be a mess. I think AT&T and DirecTV however did a great job at merging and keeping the people happy.
