Re: Can't we all just get along
Platforms don't NEED to be closed in order to vet apps and improve security... Google's management of the Android world leaves much to be desired, but it doesn't have to be that way. Amazon, unfortunately, hasn't been a leader in showing anyone how to manage -- with its FireOS fork of Android. Amazon Fire devices could have all the niceties of Apple and the open source benefits from Android... but Amazon just hasn't put in the effort or investment in doing it. Instead, FireOS is a half-measure of "vetted" Android apps that aren't curated at all but seem to be driven by some kind of advertising metrics. I suppose Google is also knee-capping FireOS by limiting how Google Play apps can be loaded on Fire devices.

Perhaps Cyanogen will be better someday, but it, too, hasn't really garnered the developer interest to make it a leading mobile OS.

Windows 10 Mobile is a closed platform... and it's nothing like the experience of iOS.

I'm hoping someday open source platforms like Ubuntu or Neverware can demonstrate how to turn an open source environment into a nice and secure service/product for end users.

Re: Can't we all just get along
@afwriter I agree with closed systems from a security/control standpoint - it's why I prefer Apple to Android: I like knowing that any apps I use have been vetted by Apple, even if it means options may be more limited.

Open source can have the benefit of a passionate development community with the freedom/flexibilty to be more innovative. It also fosters collaboration with more diverse personality/skillsets than when limited to a proprietary system's restrictions and priorities.

If I had to choose between the two, I'd still opt for security over innovation, when it comes to my personal devices!

Can't we all just get along
I am actually a fan of closed systems because I like the controlled feeling and safety that they give.  That being said if other people love oen systems let them have it; consumers will talk with their money and if they think that one platforms open system is being rigged by the big guys another platform will step up to take its place.

It should be a very interesting presentation. I'm not sure I'll be able to make the live presentation, but I assume it will be archived.
