Mobile's Weakest Security link
There are many companies and just regular people that do not take security seriously.  They all seem to place it on the list at the bottom.  I think that it should be placed high up on the list.  Now-a-days you NEED security pretty much on everything.  Well, at least I do.  I also figured out if there is something out there that seems to be awesome it usually isn't.  So I tell my children security is priority and watch out for lot of scams.  We know there are tons of them out in the internet world.

Re: Wireless based threats...
@mhh: Thanks for clarifying on this.  I was one of the many who thought that it had been.

In any case, however, the point remains the same about the breach of the "air gap."  (Or, rather, air+atmosphere+vacuum gap.)

Re: Mobile Security
A lot of companies put security on the back burner these days and I dot understand why. I totally agree with what you said about companies being in a rush and just sending new items out without fully testing them. In the long run it just makes the company look bad. It's better to take the time the item deserves and send out a top quality device for the customer.

Mobile Security
This is a result of lack of trained experts, companies refusing to implement strong security measures, lack of testing and companies focused on profit instead of providing quality products and services. Companies are in a hurry to rush products to market without testing them and ensuring data will be protected.

If it is too good to be true, it usually isn't--eternal vigilance is paramount if we are to ever survive the "digital civil war" we are unfortunately party to.

Re: Makes Sense
The vulnerabilities in the SS7 (Signaling System Seven) network make ALL phones, not just smartphones a pretty weak point in security. Rep. Ted Lieu's experience on 60 Minutes, allowing hackers to know just a few basic details of his phone, shows that everyone is far more vulnerable to phone hacks than they think they are.

Maybe if you're paranoid enough to only use encrypted messaging apps...?

Re: Wireless based threats...
I don't think the International Space Station was really infected with Stuxnet... so I had to check:

https://www.yahoo.com/news/no-stuxnet-did-not-infect-international-space-station-002152419.html?

The ISS *has* had other computer viruses, though, (and it has apparently switched to Linux to try to reduce its malware...) so it was possible that Stuxnet could have been on the ISS, but no reports really confirm it.

The ISS is about the biggest "air gap" possible...

Makes Sense
This has been the case ever since are phones started to be called "Smart".  We see multiple instances of phone hacking in both the public and private sectors and part of the issue is that mobile security is lacking in general, it can't keep up with the threats, and a majority of the population doesn't even know that they could be taking steps to protect themselves from some of the mobile threats out there.

It can be with certain systems, as long as you don't let anyone stick just any USB stick in them (which is how the International Space Station got infected with Stuxnet).

Heh. I suppose the term "air gapping" isn't a real solution for security anymore. :P
