The problem is that companies think they know what customers want but they really don't. If they actually got real feedback from customers and gave customers what they wanted they could generate more revenue, reduce customers switching companies and keep customers happy. They believe existing customers are happy customers when in many cases customers just don't bother to search for a new company. Customers are not happy but they don't seem concerned.

Siri on Apple TV is maybe going to do a little bit of this.. but it won't be comprehensive. Maybe Tivo (with Rovi) will do it? Google Play? Google seems like it might have the right philosophy to do it right....

It would break it completely if it was a nationwide OTT service, which Comcast doesn't want to do, for now. Among other things, that would mean competing against other cable companeis in their footprints.

Mike, Dcawrey,

I think it breaks the tether completely.  Once view-on-signup is possible for new customers, nobody is going to see any reason for tethering afterward (unless the OTT service for some weird reason financially incentivizes it, and why would they pay people to accept something that raises the service's expenses?) Even if the first versions are technician nightmares, if they work at all from the consumer standpoint, it's the immediate end to "I signed up for it and the [physical device] guy should be here any time now."

And being able to view video content right after signing up breaks the tether (at least a little bit) to a set-top box or gateway.

Being able to sign up immediately would be great. When you think about it, that's one of the elements of TVE that should be a top benefit. Right now, if you want cable service there's a bunch of things that need to happen in order for it all to work. Netflix has been dominating in the world of easy set up. Not for long, though.

I think that Forlenzo doing the interview on Comcast is great talking about the services and products and how it works and doing many business ventures etc.

Even before it had its own streaming platform, Moonves was very protective of CBS' content. It would be great to have a tool that showed which video content was avaiable on which platform.

Is that because CBS has its own streaming platform efforts (and doesn't play well with Hulu, either)? It's annoying for end users to have to keep track of which networks are available on which apps/services....

Maybe there's an opportunity for a media search engine to keep track of all these things and provide an easy way for viewers to get access... (Other than PopcornTime....)

Re: Rightholders...
TVE content rights were a big sticking point in retransmission agreements a while back. (CBS in particular) I can understand the content owners wanting to have control over their content, but at some point you need to give the customers what they want, either through a service provider or a programmer's web portal. Comcast is interesting since it is both a content owner, and will be even more so with DreamWorks, and service provider.
