You're right, so much easier said than done. I don't think they're doing such a bad job I just think that there needs to be more ideas floating around and a more community way of thinking.

I would also add microsoft to that as well with Satya Nadel has done to transform Microsoft over the past one-year and a half.

Yes -- right now, Google and Amazon are two companies avoiding the middle-age doldrums, at least by outward appearances.

It is ever so true, but Google seems to be the exception to the rule, right?

6. Google CEO Sundar Pichai explained the company's "Area 120" division. The division is where employees build their own startups.

The ability to execute a cultural change is inversely proportional to the size and age of the company --  which is why this is such a struggle for incumbents. This isn't just an issue for network operators: even a company like Apple is now confronting the joys of organizational middle age.

The biggest challenge is summoning the organizational will to create and execute a comprehensive transformation strategy that directly involves the entire entity. The piecemeal approach will result in incremental and sporadic progress, but that may not be good enough for long-term success.
