@mhhf1ve yes, there are lot more interactive visualization today. Even the static ones sometimes strive for greater visual appeal than mere bars and the like.

Thanks for the pointer, Ariella! I'll definitely check it out. Data analytics in some respects hasn't changed in decades -- because people's brains still like to see 2D charts -- but in other ways, data visualizations have become more dynamic and animated (and are almost totally different).

@mhhf1ve actually it was very good. I even downloaded a number of the slides presented to have them for future reference. The class should be archived. I'll email you the link.

There are also many ways to "lie" with visualizations of big data -- just think of USAToday's daily infographics done on a larger scale. It's so easy to make a pretty graph that totally misrepresents or distorts the underlying data.

@batye you're probably a numbers person. But to communicate big data effects, visualization is a big area in translating what all those numbers mean in everyday terms. I recently attended a class on big data that devoted several minutes to the importance of clear visualization, particularly when the data analysts seek to communicate effectively with the people who don't really speak data.

@Ariella I would say to each his own as with visial representation of the data I get lost...

I prefer just to see numbers - for me see numbers is easy....

@elizabethv Exactly! One another site I regularly visit, one of the posts looks at issues of data visualization. The one presented this past week looked at teachers' salaries in different states over a number of years. To make the graph more meaningul, it says all the amounts were in a set year's dollars.

Re: Foundation of our Society
The article doesn't say either way, but that is definitely a fair view point to take. In fact, it's almost interesting that it doesn't say. Because accounting for inflation, the increase may not be nearly as large as it seems.
