Re: Hard to make a long term investment a priority...?
Good point. I feel like long term projects and people lose focus on the main objective and it kind of falls by the waist side.

Exactly. Long term projects can be a goal, but not a priority. Priorities are the smaller steps that lead to the long term goal.

Unifying top level
I think all options are needed. However, unifying top-level vision and strategy, including realigning processes and re-training staff is critical to implementing any new product, service or technology.

Companies need to assess the top-down and bottom-up views. Companies also need to perform effective strategic planning and business process reengineering. In many instances this requires external support from contractors because many companies do not have the skill set or resources to support these types of effort

mhhf1ve, I agree. It is harder to remain focused and work on long-term projects and in many cases long-term projects fail or go over budget.

Agreed. It's hard to know what will happen so many years in advance. Especially when dealing with technology because it's forever changing quickly.

Re: Hard to make a long term investment a priority...?
Excellent question. I picked the answer that included staff training because I think longterm changes will need extra training to meet future demands.

Hard to make a long term investment a priority...?
Maybe it's just me, but priorities are usually for the short term -- as in a priority for the next year. And long term development projects are hard to make a priority because they take longer than a year, so... how do you keep these kinds of projects at the top of a priority list for more than a year?
