Re: Really impressive...
Having academic institutions as customers is interesting. While they are resistant to spending a ton of money on change, they are dependant customers. Seems like a very unqiue mix of clients for this company.

Re: Cable Business Services Poll
I'll pick #5 -- business opportunities will be regional and limited for the forseeable future... Cable operators can't really serve nation-wide chains like the big telcos can. However, I have seen some interesting CLECs that aggregate regional services into a single bill for national retail chains... But that's a fairly narrow market, too.

Re: Cable Business Services Poll
I'll take #6 as well, especially if/when MEF gets the interconnects between cable operators figured out. Then they can pass customers from one cable op to another. Overall, broadband and business services are the future for cable operators.

Re: Cable Business Services Poll
I have to go with #6.  Businesses shell out a lot of cash for these services because they are a need in the 21st century.

Re: Really impressive...
@mhhf1ve I would have to agree.  I live in a mediacom service area and I always thought of them as a small town mom and pop kind of service provider.  This article oppened my eyes a bit.

Cable Business Services Poll
Mediacom clearly is serious about business services. Which of the following best reflects your attitude about cable operators' forays into this sector? Select any number of choices, since they overlap.

1. They have largely been successful; It is a thriving sector for them.

2. Success has been spotty, with some MSOs doing well and some failing or simply not paying attention.

3. Operators talk a good game, but largely haven't delivered.

4. The opportunities are there, but business services have fallen from the top of operators' to-do lists as more attractive opportunities emerge.

5. Because of the nature of cable, business services always will be regional for them, and therefore a good opportunity, but limited.

6. Business services are the revenue generator of the future--and always will be.

Really impressive...
The scrappiness of CLECs and how far they've come over the years never ceases to impress. They have unique challenges and don't have the footprint or resources of much larger incumbents, but they somehow keep up with technology and sometimes even leapfrog the big guys.
