Well, planning and design certainly looks critical -- but then you have to accept the flip side, "the street finds its own uses for technology." How much of the present world did the creators of Star80, or of ArpaNet, even remotely imagine in the design/planning stages? Most especially, what was planned and designed isn't necessarily what's going to be the most important use.

AT&T's Culture of Innovation
AT&T continues to remain a leader in their industry. It is great that they have created an effective design.
When designing anything the planning and design stages are the most critical. If one piece is not designed correctly the entire process fails.
This will allow AT&T to product quality products and services for existing customers and attract new customers.

They come by it as an honest inheritance.
A lot of what's described here is the way things worked at Bell Labs, back when AT&T owned that. The things that make a good innovation space have been known for a long time; it's just that they tend to be too much fun for the techies and too much work for the managers! Good on AT&T for doing it anyway.

@dcawrey, agreed that it is exciting to see large companies continue to innovate.
I think one of the impressive characteristics of AT&T culture of innovation is their total commitment to developing not only these "foundries", but their previously reported initiatives for upskilling their existing workforce to prepare their staff to work within this new culture for innovation. This suggest total commitment.
I hope they continue to be a leader and reap the benefits.

It's in AT&T's best interest to foster development of new technologies in this way.
From virtual reality to Internet of Things, all of this helps the company be a frontrunner for the future. It's kind of refreshing to see a larger organization behave in this way.

Mike, excellent interview and outstanding model of true innovation.
AT&T has developed an excellent design that appears to be sustainable. Their model and the industry-driven foundries appears to be highy effective. I can see why they continue to lead in innovation. I think this will produce benefits in product/service innovation for years to come.
