Re: Open open
Michelle, I think that openness is a one-way valve; every time things open a little more because one competitor finds it an advantage, everyone else has to follow suit. If anyone is dumb enough to try to clamp down or make things proprietary, they'll have to come up with some uncopyable, fully patentable trade secret -- and I just don't think that exists now, if it ever did.

Re: Open open
I like to think you'll be right about this when that future arrives. Open by design should remain so.

APIs
APIs expand the options available to companies and can expand the services they provide to customers. APIs are a standard favorite of developers and will continue to be in the future.

This will allow companies to provide services that customers desire.

Re: Open open
Michelle, I think if any present-day manager tries to shift away from open to proprietary APIs, there's going to be a riot. Engineer time at any one company is edging down toward two years, and nondisclosure is increasingly a formality at all except the most research-oriented, cutting-edge companies; there are many people whose careers are built around creating essentially the same project at one firm after another, and they depend on reusable, portable, open APIs. Not to mention that the huge technophile/enthusiast segment loves building and working on them, and is the closest thing to a major industrial player running on free labor we've ever had. If some Board of Fossils decided to "declare independence," every manager with half a brain would try to talk them out of it, and it would take a real mix of folly and bravery to present that to the tech folk.

Open APIs are here to stay, like mostly-free music, uncensored content, and open software generally.  If there was a time to stop them (or a reason) it has long since passed.

Open open
In light of recent copyright rulings, I wonder what happens to the open APIs when there's a shift in company priority. Could there be a case for a shift away from open? What might that look like for API users? Or are these APIs all together different than the ones in litigation?

Re: Customer Experience
There's a need for new thinking on how to cater to customers...

This is the approach that needs to be adapted across the board. I would say this should be the first step in the roadmap towards achieving good results in customer satisfaction.

Re: Customer Experience
Couldn't agree more! This is great for the customers. I always think it's great when businesses look for new ways to make the consumers happy and I think APIs will do that!

No Surprise
API traffic has grown 2.8 times year-over-year....

This is absolutely no surprise. Makes total sense to adapt this trend. Primary reasons could be cut down of development time, back office costs and feasibility to cutomize as per the needs.

Customer Experience
Open APIs can really help customer experiences.

There's a need for new thinking on how to cater to customers. A plethora of options now exists with APIs to make sure customers are happy. This is probably the most outward-looking benefits we'll see from open APIs.
