@dlr: And the way you do this is with a good network of partners and contributors.  It's at least part of why, for instance, the iPod was victorious over the arguably more technologically superior Zune.

On a related note, here's an interesting tidbit I picked up at the MIT CIO Symposium earlier this year.  The General Manager of Uber's Boston office spoke on a panel, and told the audience that when Uber moves into a new city, their big problem isn't finding enough passengers; it's finding enough drivers -- and that they're always in demand for more drivers.

True. A platform is always a place to start ad make something bigger. I think joining up and having partners is a smart way to go.

Open source is a great option. It can reduce costs, reduce time to market and increase efficiency.

Platforms are platforms.  That said, appealing to DevOps seems to be the way to go -- especially because it's a bigger challenge than building out and evangelizing a video platform and contributions thereto.
